UMass Boston’s O’Grady Leads Beacons Over Huskies 1-0 in Overtime

GORHAM, Maine – After 93 scoreless minutes of soccer, UMass Boston Beacon freshman Jaclyn O'Grady (Somers, Conn.) scored in the 94th minute to lift the Beacons to a 1-0 overtime win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.  The goal was O'Grady's third game-winner of the season and team-leading fourth of the season.

 

With the win, UMass Boston remains undefeated in the Little East at 2-0 and improves its overall record to 3-4-1.  Southern Maine dips to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the LEC.

O'Grady won the fifty-fifty ball and then settled it carrying to the center of the field.  Bringin the ball to just outside of the 18, O'Grady kept the Huskies' defender on her hip and turned and fired a low shot past the outstretched arms of USM senior goalkeeper Marissa Temple (Grafton, Mass.) for the win.

The game nearly did not reach the overtime session as the final few minutes of regulation saw a flurry of solid chances by both squads, including a direct kick from O'Grady that narrowly missed the upper 90, and a shot from senior Kate McMinamin (Acworth, Ga./Allatoona) clanged off the post. The Huskies had a pair of near one-on-one opportunities snuffed out by a call of offside.

Temple played outstanding in goal for USM making nine saves, including stopping a one-on-one attempt late in the second half and an athletic tip to save a goal off of a shot from UMB freshman Kate Leavitt (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) in the 43rd minute.  Beacons' freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Fugiel (Easthampton, Mass.) earned the shutout making five saves.

Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) on the road at Colby in non-conference. UMass Boston stays on the road and travels to Salem State on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).
