Beckles named assistant tennis coach

WATERVILLE, Maine — Lanell Beckles, former head tennis coach at Newbury College, is a new assistant coach for the Colby College tennis programs.

He was head coach at Newbury last year and served this summer as assistant director/teaching professional at the New England Golf & Tennis Camp in Belgrade, Maine.

Beckles, who has a bachelor’s degree from University of Arizona, works under new Colby head coach Jason Cohen.

Beckles had an internship with the United States Olympic Committee in 2007. He assisted the director of sports performance during training sessions and designed, organized, and implemented training programs for the archery and men’s field hockey teams.

From 2006 to 2008, he was a strength and conditioning coach and assistant track and field coach at American International College.

With a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) 2 certification, Beckles has worked extensively with youth programs in Arlington, Mass., and Hamilton, Mass. He also was a volunteer pro at the Harvard University Murr Center.
