Artist’s Gallery Talk at 4 p.m. on December 1, 2016

Bangor, Maine – The Robert E. White Gallery at Husson University presents My Curiosities, an exhibit highlighting selections from over 15 years of original oil paintings and intaglio prints by artist Mary Hart. Hart is a visiting professor of printmaking at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Her studio and art practice are based in Portland, Maine.

The title of this show refers to an old tradition of collecting marvelous objects into a “Cabinet of Curiosities.” From the Renaissance to a recent exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, as the scholar Francesca Fiorina writes, these collections provide us with “…a microcosm or theater of the world, and a memory theater.” Hart has a similar goal for the body of work now showing at the White Gallery in Campus Center at Husson University. One will find 30 artworks, including paintings and prints, as well as a small installation case of the objects she uses as a visual reference.

Of her work, Hart says: “We all collect unique things; it could be a penny on the sidewalk, a piece of

Bandmembers Ward Hayden (vocals/guitar), Paul Dilley  (electric and upright bass/piano), Josh Kiggans (drums/percussion), and Chris Hersch (lead guitar/banjo) find musical inspiration from early ’50s rock ‘n’ roll icons such as Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, and Buddy Holly, as well as country greats like Hank Williams and Johnny Cash.

COAST GUARD ESCORTS 4 TO SAFETY AFTER HEAVY WINDS, SEAS DAMAGE FISHING BOAT OFF PORTLAND, MAINE

Boothbay Harbor, Maine - The Coast Guard assisted four people to safety Wednesday after heavy winds and seas damaged a fishing boat about 40 miles southeast of Portland, Maine.

A fisherman aboard the Gracelyn Jane sent a distress hail to Coast Guard Sector Northern New England watchstanders Tuesday evening and reported their fishing boat was disabled with four people aboard. The man reported the crew lost their GPS, the boat was losing power, and their windows had shattered.

On scene weather at the time was 30 knot winds and 10-14 foot seas.

The 270-foot Coast Guard Cutter Northland, homported in Portsmouth, Virginia, was approximately ten miles from Gracelyn Jane’s location and quickly diverted from their patrol to help. A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod also deployed to provide assistance.

After arriving on scene, Northland’s crew found the Gracelyn Jane regained power and made way toward shore escorted by the Coast Guard.

Once closer to shore, a response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Boothbay Harbor relieved Northland’s crew from their escort and accompanied Gracelyn Jane into Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

"The Gulf of Maine is especially unforgiving this time of year,” said Lt. Scott McCann, the command center chief at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “The Gracelyn Jane was fortunate we had a Coast Guard cutter nearby and that their damage wasn't worse. This is a good reminder to all mariners, including professionals, to exercise prudence and preparation every single time they head out."

There were no reported injuries. The Gracelyn Jane hails out of Portland.

Downeast Sunrise Trail Extension Completed

Commissioners Whitcomb and Bernhardt to attend Ribbon Cutting Ceremony December 2

ELLSWORTH – The Downeast Sunrise Trail (DEST) has now been completed with addition of the final two miles from Hancock into Ellsworth, after a quarter century of work. Commissioners from two collaborating state agencies and community partners will be on hand December 2 for a ceremonial ribbon cutting commemorating the event. The ceremony, hosted by the Sunrise Trail Coalition, Inc. and the City of Ellsworth, will take place at the new High Street Trailhead in Ellsworth on Friday at 11:00 a.m.

The Downeast Sunrise Trail (aka Calais Branch Corridor Rehabilitation Project) was an interagency effort between MaineDOT and Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s (DACF) Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL). MaineDOT owns the rail corridor and the BPL managed the construction, and will oversee continued maintenance of the multi-use recreation trail. The project has received support from several community partners and recreational groups.

“This is an example of Maine state government working with community partners to complete a project that will generate substantial economic activity and support Maine as a year-round destination,” said Governor Paul R. LePage. “The ATV and snowmobile industries alone bring in over $500 million dollars to the State each year. Add to that the revenues that flow from its multi-use design and you have a significant resource for Maine people, visitors and the businesses that cater to them.”

Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Commissioner Walt Whitcomb and MaineDOT Commissioner David Bernhardt stressed the economic, recreational and its connection to the countries transportation system.

“Residents of Ellsworth and visitors will now have the opportunity to use a trail which directly links the City to the 87-mile recreational trail system,” said Commissioner Whitcomb. “This is an easily maneuverable trail with gentle grades and a smooth solid base, which will provide users with the opportunity to engage in exercise to improve cardio-vascular health and reduce obesity. This trail links to 800-miles of ATV and snowmobile trails including ITS 81 and 82.”

“This new trail, part of Maine’s transportation network, will encourage trail users to visit Ellsworth’s local restaurants, lodging facilities, fuel stations, merchandise sales and other services,” said Commissioner Bernhardt. “Having the trail head in the City of Ellsworth will entice tourists to visit this unique trail system. It is also is included in the East Coast Greenway which runs from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida.”

Down East Sunrise Trail (Calais Branch Corridor Rehabilitation Project):

The project, begun in 1987, has been an interagency effort between MaineDOT and the DACF’s Bureau of Parks and Lands. It has been constructed in two phases.

Phase I – An 85- mile rail trail from Washington Junction, Hancock to Ayers Junction, Pembroke, opened in September 2010.  This project preserved the rail corridor for future rail use, while in the interim providing a multi-use rail trail connecting multiple communities. The DACF was the lead agency in constructing this phase of the DEST.  Construction of the trail was paid for with proceeds from the sale of the rail steel.

Phase II – “Rail with trail” extended the 85-miles of existing rail trail 2 miles into Ellsworth. This provides trail users direct access to food, fuel, lodging, shopping and amenities. Phase II was also funded with proceeds from rail steel from Phase I and cost 1.3 million dollars.

Plymouth Engineering designed both Phase I and Phase II.  Lane Construction was the contractor for Phase II.

Community Support:

Numerous organizations and area clubs worked to make this project possible. These include:

The Sunrise Trail Coalition, Inc., which represents the interests of the Trail multi-users, and through its membership dues, donations and grants sponsors annual community events and provides necessary accessory facilities like benches, picnic tables along the Trail.

The Acadia Area ATV Club, which owns property with plans for a clubhouse in Hancock near the parking lot, entered into a trail use agreement which allows the trail to be built on their property.

The Ellsworth Snowmobile Club will take care of grooming this section of the trail. The club will be working along with the Frenchmen’s Bay Snowmobile Club to assist with development of snowmobile access into and around Ellsworth area, with some trails already in place.

Future maintenance and upkeep is being done by these clubs and managed by the DACF Off-road Vehicle Office. Clubs involved in maintaining the DEST from Ellsworth to Ayers Junction:

Downeast Trail Riders ATV & Snowmobile Club from East Machias
Dennysville Snowmobile & ATV Club from Dennysville
Narraguagus Snowmobile & ATV Club from Cherryfield
Ridge Riders Trail Club from Machias

Expansion of Search for Invasive Forest Pests Announced

*Outreach will encompass all 16 Maine Counties in effort to combat growing threat posed by invasive insects*

AUGUSTA - The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) announced two awards that will expand outreach to all 16 Maine counties in an effort to address the growing threat from invasive forest pests. The Maine Association of Conservation Districts Employees Committee and the Saco River Recreational Council received continued funding ($35,000 and $5,000, respectively) for their efforts to provide outreach and education to engage citizens in helping protect Maine forests.

"Early detection of invasive pests such as Asian longhorned beetle, emerald ash borer, hemlock woolly adelgid, winter moth and others are crucial in protecting the forest products and forest recreation industries in a state that is 90% forested," said DACF Commissioner Walt Whitcomb. "Once these insects have established a foothold in other states, they become difficult if not impossible to eradicate. By working in partnership with soil and water conservation districts in all 16 counties and community partners along the Saco River, we can better protect our forest resources and economies."

Early detection of invasive forest pets can be accomplished through outreach and education efforts. This not only reduces the costs and resources needed for a management response, but also increases the chances of eradication success.

The DACF has been conducting outreach and education since 2009 with funding provided by the Farm Bill Section 10007. The Maine Association of Conservation Districts Employees Committee, in partnership with 12 county conservation districts in Southern and Central Maine, and the Saco River Recreational Council were both awarded funding under a competitive Request for Proposal issued by the DACF in 2015. This year's awards continue the outreach provided by these organizations, expanding outreach to all 16 counties in Maine.

"The outreach and education that are being contributed by these two conservation organizations will enhance the Department's existing efforts resulting in increased public understanding of the economic and environmental threats associated with invasive forest pests," said Karen Coluzzi, DACF State Pest Survey Coordinator. "The awards increase support for management and mitigation efforts, and increase reporting of potential pest sightings to federal or state authorities. The threat of invasive forest species requires continued vigilance, education and awareness of the general public to safeguard this significant state resource."

For more information on invasive forest pest outreach and education in Maine, contact Karen Coluzzi at the DACF Division of Animal and Plant Health at Karen.L.Coluzzi@Maine.Gov or at (207) 287-7551.

Eastern Maine Community College prepares students for careers in IT.

Bangor, Maine - Communications between computers is a critical part of our everyday life and in today’s world, if the computers go down, the workplace can grind to a halt. Information Technology is a growing industry with a continuous need for skilled workers. To help meet the demand, EMCC is offering Computer Systems Technology, a two-year Associate in Applied Science Degree program designed to train students in personal computer hardware and software; data communications; and computer network hardware, software, and management.

Students enrolled in the Computer Systems Technology program will receive a solid foundation in systems hardware and software, network design and management, customer service, and information security. Laboratory work with peer-to-peer and client/server networks, local- and wide-area networks (LANs and WANs), and midrange/mainframe multi-user systems allows the student to apply knowledge gained in the classroom.

"The CST program at EMCC has been a blast so far. The program is ever changing and uses hands on

THE BANG GROUP’S NUT/CRACKED COMES TO THE DANCE HALL

It’s The Nutcracker, but definitely not as we know it!

Kittery, Maine - New York City’s The Bang Group brings its signature holiday fare, NUT/CRACKED, to The Dance Hall in Kittery for two shows on Friday, December 9th at 7:30pm and Saturday, December 10th at 2pm. It’s The Nutcracker, but definitely not as we know it! The Bang Group has taken every little girls favorite Christmas show and torn it limb from limb. Mixing Tchaikovsky's original score with music by Duke Ellington, Glen Miller and others, the company turns the sugar coated ballet into a percussive piece of dance theatre. Expect tap dancing, singing and some unusual pointe shoe activity. Nothing is sacred as Nutcracked twists and melds various dance traditions into an ode to American eclecticism which honors the power of the human urge to dance while riding Tchaikovsky's voluptuous waves of rhythm.

The Bang Group's mission, based on choreographer David Parker's vision of diverse dance forms united by a common purpose, is to facillitate the creation and performance of Parker's work and to promote, mentor and present the work of artists who embody this vision. Standards of craftsmanship, creative liberty and aesthetic diversity are present in the rehearsal and mentoring process, in the curation of the company's performances and those presented by The Bang Group at venues throughout the U.S. and Europe..

The Bang Group has enjoyed significant domestic touring including engagements and/or commissions from Philadelphia Dance Affiliates, University of Maryland at College Park, Sushi in San Diego, Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Wortham Center in Houston, Northwestern University in Evanston, American Dance Festival, The Yard on Marthas Vineyard, Portland, Maine Performing Arts, Actors Theater of Louisville, Jacobs Pillow Inside/Out, Fire Island Dance Festival, Provincetown Playhouse and several others. The Bang Group has appeared in 23 of the United States. In addition, the company has appeared regularly in Montreal at Studio 303, Tangente, CINARS Festival and Divers Cite.

European touring highlights include The Holland Dance Festival, Tanzsprache Vienna, Dance Week Zagreb, Belluard Bollwerk Switzerland, Invito Alla Danza in Rome, Charleroi Danses Biennale in Belgium, Fondation Cartier in Paris, Konfrontace in Prague, Divdelna Nitra in Slovakia, Folkswang in Essen, Germany, Monaco Danse Forum, OT 301 in Amsterdam, Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

"“Nut/Cracked” is not only   immensely entertaining  but also intensely musical and witty, melding tap, disco, ballet and contemporary dance over 22 scenes that combine fantasy and silliness to marvelous effect."
-  Roslyn Sulcas, in the New York Times

Tickets are $20 Senior/Child in advance and  $25 at the door, and $25 Adult advance, and $30 at the door and can be purchased at TheDanceHallKittery.org and Brownpapertickets.com.

Eastern Maine Community College offers Digital Graphic Design program

Bangor, Maine - A picture’s worth 1,000 words. Eastern Maine Community College appreciates the fact that we are living in a world of imagery so it has developed a program to train students to tell stories through graphic design. Everything from signage to clothing to newspaper ads has graphics and the trend is growing. For example, today, we often see infographics instead of written documents to provide information. As the industry expands, more trained designers will be required to meet the demand and EMCC is ready to turn out these artists with its Digital Graphic Design program.

EMCC’s associate in applied science degree in Digital Graphic Design is a comprehensive program that will prepare students for careers as graphic artists, photographers, print media designers, illustrators, and web designers. Graduates may also transfer to four-year colleges and universities to continue their education.

Students enrolled in the Digital Graphic Design program will gain an understanding of theoretical foundations, design principles, page layout, photography, image manipulation and editing, digital illustration, web design and printing/publishing and will be well-prepared for the workforce.

"The job market is tough for everyone—even for individuals with a degree,” said Amy Wilkins, student in the Digital Graphic Design program. “Creative fields like animation, film, and graphic design are even tougher because companies and studios are looking for talented individuals with multiple skills, and not just in one field of interest. This program gives us that training.”

Heather Magee, chair of the Digital Graphic Design Department, agrees. “Colleges across America are onboard, and now offer rigorous programs of study to meet the demands of the industry,” she said. “Today’s graphic design programs prepare students to work in multiple fields from advertising and publishing to printing and computer systems design. While California and New York are chock full of design colleges, other smaller states have their fair share of fine graphic design schools. Maine is one of these states."

There has never been a better time to enroll in Eastern Maine Community College. Students who apply and are accepted to Eastern Maine Community College for the first time in January 2017 will receive a tuition and fee waiver for 50 percent of their spring semester credits purchased. EMCC is waiving all applications fees for Spring Semester. Once accepted, students will pay for a credit hour and those funds will be matched by scholarship provided by the Gaming funds equaling the amount purchased.

Eastern Maine Community College is a two-year college that provides the highest quality post-secondary technical, career and transfer education and serves as a dynamic community and economic development resource. In addition to its Bangor campus, the college has three off-campus higher education centers in Dover-Foxcroft, Ellsworth, and East Millinocket.

Clarity Retrospective Opening Reception December 8

Clarity is a two-person art team of Robert and Su.Sane Hake, who will return with another dazzling exhibit during the month of December in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library. “Temper Tantrum, A 20/20 Vision,” is “a show to heal our time.” The show is a retrospective display of the team’s work, gathering together thirty years of collaborative work, and creating a “pattern tapestry of transmutation for our time.” Join artists Robert and Su.Sane Hake for a gala opening reception in the Jean Picker Room Gallery on Thursday, December 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

The Clarity duo are transmutational artists and writers, who work through collaboration and storytelling to create patterns that facilitate change. They look forward to bringing their new collection to the library for the month of December and invite everyone to join. “Beloved community, bring your drums and rattles, and your stomping feet. Have a Temper Tantrum with us! It’s been a long time since we were 4 or 5 or 6.

“We pray together as community, we play together as community, we work together as community,” they continued, “but remember, when we were small, when there were no words, or reason, or borders for the depth of our frustration, need, or anger, we had a Temper Tantrum, until the Calming Mother showed us a way out.

“Join us December 8, the Tantrum part of the show begins at 7:30 pm. Andrea Goodman will sing us back as the Calming Mother Sound.”

Clarity will also be the featured speakers at a Quarry Hill presentation at the Library on December 14; advance registration for the Hakes’ presentation on December 14 is required.
