WILLIAMSTOWN, Massachusetts -- Bates sophomores Ben Rosen and Fergus Scott both bowed out in the Round of 16 of the ITA Northeast Regional Championship singles tournament on Saturday, keeping the Bobcat men's tennis team out of Sunday play.

Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to the fourth-seeded player in the 64-man field, Middlebury's Ari Smolyar, on Saturday morning. Scott (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) fell 7-5, 6-4 to MIT's Alex Cauneac in the same round.

On the tournament's first day Friday, fielding three singles players and two doubles pairs, Bates won a combined six matches against three losses.

Rosen and Scott both stayed alive through two rounds in the 64-player singles field. Rosen coasted past Tyler Ng of Brandeis 6-1, 6-2, then defeated Trinity's Ford Traff 6-5, 6-4 to reach the Round of 16.

Scott defeated Thomas Hackett of Coast Guard 6-3, 6-2 in the first round, then upset the seeded Michael Solimano of Amherst 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the Round of 16, where he will next face MIT's Alex Cauneac on Saturday.

Junior Pat Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) also picked up a first-round win, defeating Springfield's Tanner DeVarennes 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, before falling in the Round of 32 to fifth-seeded Jose Raventos of Williams.

In the doubles tournament, Rosen and Ordway teamed up for an 8-2 victory over Wheaton College's Gassen/Ryser duo, but the Bobcats were ousted in the Round of 16 by Williams' eighth-seeded team of Raventos and Schidlovsky.
Bates next hosts the Wallach Invitational Oct. 10-11.
