Southern Maine Falls 1-0 in Overtime to Westfield State University

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Junior Holly Brouillette (Burlington, Mass.) converted an assist from senior Emily Williams (Deerfield, Mass./Frontier Regional) less than two minutes into the overtime period to lift the Westfield State University Owls to a 1-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Owls improve to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Little East Conference.  Playing in their third overtime game of the season and third in their last four games, the Huskies fall to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the Little East.

Despite outshooting the Owls 13-10 overall and 7-5 on goal and holding a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners, USM was unable to break through for a goal.  WSU goalkeeper junior Megan Fountaine (Scituate, Mass.) made seven saves to earn the shut out.

With the score at 0-0 at the end of regulation, Westfield State wasted little time stealing the victory as Brouillette found the back of the cage in the 72nd minute.  The goal is Brouillette's team-leading ninth of the season and her third game-winning goal of 2015.

Southern Maine junior goalkeeper Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) made four saves in the loss.
Southern Maine remains in conference play and travels to Plymouth State on Tuesday (6:30 p.m.).  Westfield State hosts Fitchburg State on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) in an LEC matchup.
