September Programs for Job Seekers at the Rockland CareerCenter

Rockland, Maine - The Rockland CareerCenter, part of the Maine Department of Labor, and its partners offer a variety of services to help people find employment or upgrade skills and employers to find qualified workers.

"Each CareerCenter offers basic job search workshops that can help you write a better resume, brush up on your interviewing skills, and prepare to meet with employers," said Governor Paul R. LePage. The Rockland CareerCenter continues its series of workshops and programs for job seekers and those considering training to upgrade their skills and increase their employability. GATEways to Employment-Tuesday, September 1 and 15, 9 a.m. to noon

Designed to help you jump start your work search with the latest tips and ideas to conduct a successful job search in today's labor market.

Career Directions / Putting the Pieces Together-Wednesday, September 2, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Explores your career interests, aptitudes, values, personality, motivations, and shows how each transfers to today's job market.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator-Wednesday, September 9, 9 a.m. to noon

Understand your personality type as an aid to choosing a career. This workshop requires you to complete a paper quiz at the CareerCenter at least one week before.

Resume & Cover Letter Writing-Wednesday, September 16, 9 a.m. to noon

Shows the basics of how to evaluate or create an effective resume and cover letter.

Effective Interviewing Skills-Wednesday, Sept. 23, 9 a.m. to noon

Dedicated to exploring proper interviewing techniques and tips.

Vocational Rehabilitation Orientation-Tuesday, September 1, 1 p.m., and Wednesday, September 16, 10 a.m.

Introduction to services for job seekers with a disability that makes it difficult for them to obtain or keep a job.

Computer Boot Camp-Tuesday mornings

Arrange time with staff. Designed to introduce the computer to people who have not used one before.

Goodwill Workforce Solutions

Administers federally funded employment and training programs through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). Certain eligibility requirements apply. If you are at least 16 years of age and think you might benefit from training which can be classroom based or on the job, contact the Rockland CareerCenter at 207-596-2600 to speak with a Goodwill representative.

Each of the 12 statewide CareerCenters provides public-access computer workstations equipped with Microsoft Office, resume writing and cover letter software. In addition Internet access and O 'Net software for individual skills assessment are provided. Employers can list their open positions on Maine's Job Bank and take advantage of the online matching system, which identifies and refers job candidates. All CareerCenter services are provided free of charge to employers and job-seeking customers.

Wilton, Maine - For those who are looking to make a change in careers or get a new job, the Wilton CareerCenter will be offering a variety of programs for jobseekers in September. This orientation is for people with disabilities, who are considering Vocational Rehabilitation services. Registration is not required.

GATEway to Employment: Wednesdays, September 9 and 23, 9 a.m. to noon

This workshop offers an overview of basic information on resumes; interviews and job search skills as well as CareerCenter and community resources available during a job search-learn how the CareerCenter can help!

Essentials of College Planning for Adults: Thursday, September 17, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Covers the basic steps for successful college enrollment: learn about college and trade schools, entrance requirements, readiness and transitional issues of adult students, admissions procedures and financial aid. Review a typical admissions application, request admissions materials and financial aid information from prospective colleges and complete the financial aid form. To register, call 1-800-281-3703. Resumes and Interview Skills

An in-depth exploration of the job search, resumes, applications and interviews. Learn how to stand out positively by marketing yourself-in person and on paper-in a way that directly matches employer needs. "Tough" interview questions will be discussed so that you can answer them with confidence. Call 645-5800 to check our schedule of dates and times and schedule a workshop.

Small Business Trainings: Small Business Administration will be offering three different workshops: "Starting Your Own Small Business", "Access to Capital" and "Federal and State Resources for Small Business". What a 9th! 'Dogs score five with two outs, beat 'Cats 9-6

Manchester, New Hampshire - The Portland Sea Dogs (50-85) erased a 6-4 deficit in the eighth inning, scoring five 2-out runs in the ninth, and beat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (64-68) 9-6 on Monday night in the series opener at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

Portland held a 4-3 lead until the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Fisher Cats scored three runs off winning pitcher Madison Younginer (8-4). K.C. Hobson tied the game with a ground out and Jack Murphy ripped a two-out, two-run single.

Gregory Infante (0-1) could not save it for the Fisher Cats, allowing five unearned runs in the ninth. The top four in Portland's order all had hits to spark the win. Manuel Margot made it a one-run game with an RBI single. Tau-Wei Lin was down to his final strike, but grounded the game-winning, two-run double. Sam Travis followed with an RBI single and Oscar Tejeda singled, but an error on the right-fielder allowed the ninth run to score.

Kyle Martin pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save of the save.

Luis Diaz had a terrific outing for Portland, tying a season-high with seven innings of work on five hits and three runs.

Portland took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Oscar Tejeda's 3-run homer off Luis Perez. New Hampshire added two runs in the second inning, but the 'Dogs made it 4-3 in the fourth on a run-scoring double by Aneury Tavarez.

The Sea Dogs and New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays affiliate) continue their four-game series on Tuesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.  RHP Mike McCarthy (6-8, 4.54) makes the start for Portland. RHP Austin Bibens-Dirx toes the rubber for New Hampshire.  Pre-Game coverage begins live on the WPEI U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network at 6:15 PM.

WXC: Husson picked second in NAC Preseason Poll‏

WHITINGHAM, Vermont - Husson has been picked to finish second in the 2015 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Women's Cross Country Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league office announced Monday morning.

The Eagles garnered 80 points in the poll and finished second in last season's conference championship race.

Second-year head coach Kate Goupee expects this year's squad to be led by 2014 second team All-NAC honoree Kateri Jeffery, who finished 10th in last season's NAC Championship. Goupee's 2014 team finished 36th in the NCAA New England Division III Regional Championship and was recognized as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.

Colby-Sawyer (N.H.) was selected to repeat as the NAC Champion in the preseason poll. The Chargers received nine first place votes for a total of 99 points, while Husson was tabbed second, Maine-Farmington claimed third with 77 points, and New England (N.H.) placed fourth with 71 points and garnered the final first place vote. Rounding out the poll were Castleton (Vt.) in fifth (57 points), Thomas (Maine) (42 points), Lyndon State (Vt.) in seventh (40 points), Johnson State (Vt.) in eighth (29 points), Maine Maritime in ninth (28 points), and Green Mountain (Vt.) in 10th (27 points).

Husson hosts the Harrier Invitational in Saxl Park to open its campaign Saturday, Sept. 5. The Eagles will also host of the 2015 NAC Championship on Saturday, October 31.

MXC: Husson picked ninth in NAC Preseason Poll‏

WHITINGHAM, Vermont - Husson has been picked to finish ninth in the 2015 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men's Cross Country Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The Eagles garnered 23 points in the poll.

Andrew Balsamo returns to the Eagles squad after competing in the ECAC Championship and New England Championship last season. He finished 25th in the NAC Championship in 2014.

Colby-Sawyer (N.H.) was selected to win the NAC Championship. The Chargers received five first place votes for a total of 93 points to top the league, while Lyndon State (Vt.) garnered the remaining five first place votes and 92 points to claim a close second. New England (N.H.) earned third with 83 points, Castleton (Vt.) was voted fourth with 62 points, while the Maine-Farmington and Maine Maritime tied for fifth with 56 points apiece. Rounding out the poll were Thomas (Maine) in seventh (37 points), Johnson State (Vt.) in eighth (36 points), Husson in ninth and Green Mountain (Vt.) in 10th (12 points).

DEP Commissioner Steps Down to Join the Office of Senator Collins

Augusta, Maine - Governor Paul R. LePage announced Monday that Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Patricia Aho is stepping down. After four years serving in the LePage Administration, Aho has accepted a position within the Office of Senator Susan Collins. Aho has led the Department of Environmental Protection since September 2011, having previously served as the agency's Deputy Commissioner. At the Department, Commissioner Aho focused on making improvements to assistance, compliance and environmental literacy for all members of the regulated community, maintaining high-level protections for our natural resources. "Pattie has been a tremendous asset to the Administration by improving efficiency and accountability throughout the Department of Environmental Protection," said Governor LePage. "We wish her well knowing she will bring value and experience to Senator Collins' office."

"Working with a dedicated staff, it has been my privilege to work to improve regulatory reform, increase accountability and transparency and modernize DEP's approach to doing business," said Commissioner Aho. "It has been my distinct honor to serve the people of Maine as Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection."

Aho will join Senator Collins' team as the State Office Representative in Augusta. In this role, Aho will be the Senator's representative in Kennebec, Lincoln and Knox Counties. She will also direct constituent service efforts in those areas and manage the Augusta office staff.

"I am delighted that Pattie will be joining our team as a State Office Representative," said Senator Collins. "Pattie has a wealth of experience and brings a robust understanding of both the state and federal government to the job, as well as a deep knowledge of the area. I have known Pattie for a long time and I'm very happy to have her joining the staff."

Aho, a native of Boothbay Harbor, is a graduate of Nasson College and earned a law degree from Western New England College, School of Law. She resides in Newcastle with her husband Ron.

Governor LePage also announced Monday Avery Day will serve as acting commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection effective Monday, September 7. Day now serves as Governor LePage's Senior Policy Advisor on environmental protection; agriculture, conservation and forestry; inland fisheries and wildlife; and marine resources-related legislation and regulation. He will remain active in his role within the Governor's Office while serving as acting commissioner.

Job Search Skills/Criminal History: September 8, 2 to 4 p.m.

This workshop will be delivered in two, one-hour parts. The first hour will give you the tools you need to be successful in your job search. We will discuss strategies you can use to highlight your skills and set yourself apart from the others-it's all about marketing yourself!

The second hour will be for those with a criminal history and will discuss how to sell your skills rather than your background, tips on answering difficult questions and ideas to encourage employers to give you a chance.

Resumés and Basics and Build a Resume Workshop: September 10, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Lewiston CareerCenter, and September 23, 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Auburn Public Library

Learn the basic do's and don'ts of resume writing; how to stand out in a positive way by marketing yourself-on paper-in a way that directly matches employer needs. Computers will be available and you will be able to compose a resume with staff assistance. Participants must be able to type your own resumé.

Interview Skills/Mock Interviews: September 17, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Attend this workshop to learn the basics about interviewing and to get the tools you need to feel comfortable in an interview. Session will include a brief overview and mock interviews so that you can practice, get feedback and observe other participants!

New Mainers Workshop: How to Complete a Paper and Online Job Applications: September 24, 9 to 11 a.m.

Somali interpreters will be on hand; if other language interpreters are needed, please request by September 18.

Curious About Career Options?

Career Decision Making: September 21 (part I) and 25 (part II), 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Wording set for ballot Question 1

The wording has been finalized for the citizens' initiative ballot question, "An Act to Strengthen the Maine Clean Election Act, Improve Disclosure and Make Other Changes to the Campaign Finance Laws," which will be Question 1 on the Nov. 3, 2015 referendum election ballot.

Voters will be asked, "Do you want to change Maine law to allow publicly financed state candidates to qualify for additional funds under certain limits and rules in the Maine Clean Election Act, to improve the disclosure of who pays for political ads, and to increase penalties for violations of campaign finance law?"

Nine comments on the wording of Question 1 were received during the public comment period, which was open Thursday, July 30 through Friday, Aug. 28. Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap took these comments into consideration to draft the final language of the ballot question.

In addition to the citizens' initiative question, the November ballot will also include two bond questions:

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts – The New England Patriots made a series of roster moves in advance of tomorrow’s NFL mandatory NFL cut-down to a 75-man roster. The Patriots released five players: WR Josh Boyce, WR Jonathan Krause, TE Jimmay Mundine, DL Joe Vellano and LB Dekoda Watson.

    Boyce, 24, was originally drafted by the Patriots in the fourth round (102nd overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Texas Christian. The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder, played in nine games with three starts as a rookie in 2013 and caught nine passes for 121 yards and returned nine kicks for 214 yards. Last season, Boyce began the season on the practice squad before being signed to the 53-man roster on Dec. 27. He played in the regular-season finale vs. Buffalo but did not record any statistics. He was inactive for all three postseason games.

    Krause, 23, originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Cleveland Browns out of Vanderbilt in 2014. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder, was released by Cleveland prior to the start of the regular season and joined the New England practice squad last October.

    Mundine, 23, was signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of Kansas on June 11, 2015. The 6-foot-2, 240-pounder, played in 45 games with 19 starts at tight end and closed his career as Kansas’ third-ranked tight end in terms of yards and receptions with 1,082 yards on 86 receptions.

    Vellano, 26, originally joined the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of Maryland on May 3, 2013. The 6-foot-2, 300-pounder, made the 53-man roster as a rookie and played in 16 games with eight starts and also played in both postseason games that season. He finished the year with 48 total tackles and two sacks. Vellano began the 2014 season on the 53-man roster and then was part of the practice squad before being re-signed to the 53-man roster in the postseason. He played in five games with one start in the regular season and also saw action in the AFC Championship Game vs. Indianapolis. He finished the 2014 season with six total tackles and one sack.

    Watson, 27, was signed by the Patriots as a free agent on May 12, 2015. The 6-foot-2, 245-pounder, has played in 70 NFL games, with seven starts, and has registered 120 tackles, three sacks, one interception, four passes defensed, two forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries during his five-year NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2010-13), Jacksonville Jaguars (2014) and Dallas Cowboys (2014). Last season, he began the season with Jacksonville and appeared in nine games with one start. He posted nine tackles before being released on Nov. 11, 2014, and signing with Dallas on Nov. 14, 2014. He played in one game for the Cowboys, but did not accrue any statistics. He originally entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft pick (217th overall) by Tampa Bay in 2010 out of Florida State.

Portland Public Library presents: Creative Movement with Portland School of Ballet‏

Portland, Maine - Portland Public Library presents a creative movement dance class for young children on the first Saturday of each month in the Sam L. Cohen Children’s Library. This class, is held in partnership with the Portland School of Ballet and will be taught by Morgan Brown Sanborn, the director of the schools’ Young Dancer Program. The first class will be held on Saturday, September 5th at 10:30 am.

The class, for 3-7 year olds will incorporate imagination, creativity, and games in a fun and exciting way in order to introduce children to ballet.

Over the last fifteen years Morgan has taught multiple dance styles to all ages and abilities at several local studios and schools. She is an ABT® (American Ballet Theatre) certified teacher who has successfully completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Primary through level 3 in their National Training Curriculum. Morgan graduated magna cum laude with a BFA in dance from Point Park University.  Her other roles at Portland School of Ballet are Assistant Principal and the Director of the Summer Division. She is also a dancer with the Portland Ballet Company.

Portland Ballet was founded in 1980 as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization by Eugenia L. O’Brien, who served as both Artistic and Executive Director. Portland Ballet’s mission is to enrich the community through training, performance, education, and outreach in classical and contemporary ballet.
