Kenney and Cross were both 2-for-3 in the opener with an RBI and a run scored, while Lux was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Down 2-0 after a rough top of the first, Southern Maine bounced back to take the lead, 3-2, in the home half of the inning and never looked back. Kenney and Davis each had an RBI in the inning. The Huskies extended their lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the third, plating three more runs with Cross and Plowman each registering RBIs. USM manufactured another run in the bottom of the fourth after a lead off double from Kelly, a ground out and a wild pitch put Kelly across home plate to lead 7-2.

Junior Kasey Nolan (Braintree, Mass.) connected on a one-out double and took third on a USM error and then touched home after an RBI ground out from senior April Adams (Burlington, Mass.), but it was a close as the Vikings would get. Southern Maine overcame a rocky start in game two, rallying back from a 5-1 deficit after two innings to take the sweep. Davis was 3-for-4 for the Huskies, while Kenney and Plowman were both 2-for-3.

USM's Brown left the game after 1.1 innings pitched and was replaced by Greene. After working the Huskies out of the second inning, Greene settled in to keep the Vikings off the scoreboard the rest of the way and help her team to the come-from-behind win. With her first win of the season, Greene worked 5.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out three.

Neither team scored in the fifth, and Greene again kept Salem State off balance in the top of the sixth working her way around a one-out single, before the Huskies scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Kenney launched her team-leading fourth home run over the center field fence for an 8-5 USM lead. With a three-run lead in place, Greene closed the door on the win. The NFHCA's National Academic Squad recognized student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade point average 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2017-2018 academic year. As freshman Brown, Nicol and Spencer are first year recipients, while Redman is earning the distinction for the second time in as many eligible seasons. Demonstrating above-average academic excellence throughout their time as Southern Maine student-athletes, both Smedberg and Jackson are four-year recipients of the accolade.
"I am proud of the academic accomplishments of each of these six student-athletes, but I am exceptionally proud of Lindsay and Tayla's sustained level of academic achievement" said veteran head coach Bonny Brown-Denico. "Lindsay and Tayla have been exemplary student-athletes in all senses of the word. As nursing majors, they take their academics very seriously and have balanced the rigors of the major and the time commitments of intercollegiate athletics very well – perhaps using their time on the field as a way to release stress. Their ability to balance both aspects, including the lengthy study sessions, clinical work, and early morning practices and road trips, has paid off for both of them. They both have bright futures ahead of them and they should take great pride in their achievements."
Brown, Nicol and Spencer were each regular contributors to the Huskies' lineup in their first season in Gorham. For her career, Redman has played in 37 contests making 37 starts. She has two goals and one assist for five points, and one defensive save. She has not declared an academic major.

A costly infield throwing error and a passed ball hurt the Huskies in the fifth. Senior starting pitcher Stigerik McElhinney (Dracut, Mass.) took the loss for the Bison. McElhinney went six innings allowing all five runs on 12 hits and three walks. He struck out three.

Spartans Score Seven Goals in the Decisive Quarter
CASTLETON, Vt. -- Junior Jason Sedell (Pine Brook, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and senior Kevin McCarthy (Sayville, N.Y.) combined to score nine goals, including six in the third quarter, to lead the Castleton University Spartans to a 15-7 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
The win was the first of the season for the Spartans (1-4) after four losses. The Huskies (1-5) dropped their fifth straight since their season-opening victory at Maine Maritime Academy.
Up 6-3 at halftime, the Spartans exploded in the third quarter for seven unanswered goals to blow the game open. McCarthy ignited the outburst with a man-up goal at 13:20 off an assist from Sedell. Sedell and McCarthy scored 23 seconds apart (12:32 and 12:09) to expand the Spartans' lead to 9-3 before the quarter was three minutes old.
Before the quarter came to a close, McCarthy, Sedell (two goals) and sophomore Tyler Crowningshield (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) would score to give the home side a 13-3 lead.
The Huskies outscored the Spartans 4-2 in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was just too large to make up.
In the opening quarter, the Spartans bolted to a 3-0 lead in the first six minutes on goals by senior Sam Siegel (Brattleboro, Vt.), junior Adnane Adossama (South Burlington, Vt.) and Sedell.
Senior Seth Wing (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) got USM on the board at 5:35, and the teams would trade goals for the remainder of the half to make it 6-3 at the intermission.
Wing led the Huskies with three goals. Rookie Ethan Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine/Massabesic) had a goal and three assists. Rookie faceoff specialist Derek Davidson (Hollis, N.H./Hollis-Brookline) won 10 of 19 faceoff and had six ground balls. Freshman Robert Pini (Natick, Mass.) led all players with eight ground balls. Senior goalie Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) made nine saves in 56 minutes before giving way to rookie Griffin Hanson (Dover, N.H.) who made one save.
Sedell led all scorers with seven points on five goals and two assists, and McCarthy finished with four goals and two assists. Crowningshield and sophomore Cameron Russell (St. Albans, Vt./BFA St. Albans) each had two goals and two assists. Junior goalie Brandon Myron (Rensselaer, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) allowed five goals and made 13 saves in 51-plus minutes of action to earn his first win of the season. Rookie Maxx Ingison (Manchester, Vt./Burr Burton Academy) played the final 8:46 giving up two goals and making one save.
Southern Maine opens Little East Conference play next Saturday (1 p.m.) when it hosts the University of Massachusetts Boston at Hannaford Field. Castleton will host a non-conference game on Wednesday (4 p.m.) against SUNY Canton.
