Trenton blanks the Sea Dogs on Sunday 2-0

Trenton, New Jersey - The Trenton Thunder (27-24) scored two runs in the third inning and had a 3-hit combined shutout, beating the Sea Dogs (22-29) 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Arm & Hammer Park.

The Sea Dogs dropped 2 of 3 in the series, but finished the roadtrip at 3-3, and 15-16 in May.

 Brady Lail (3-2) earned the win for the Thunder, tossing 5 innings on one hit and one walk. Lail threw only 51 pitches in his third start of the year against Portland.  Kyle Haynes fired the final 4 innings to earn his first save of the season. Haynes yielded 2 hits and walked one.

 Joe Gunkel (2-1) suffered the loss for Portland, allowing 2 runs on hits over 5 IP.  The righty established a season-high with 7 strikeouts, one shy of tying a career mark.

 The Thunder struck with two outs in the third inning, receiving a single by Cito Culver as the rally starter. Following a Jake Cave walk, Ali Castillo lined an RBI single, but on the play, a throwing error by RF Aneury Tavarez enabled Cave to score.

 Portland had a golden opportunity to score in the seventh inning, receiving back-to-back singles from Jantzen Witte and Oscar Tejeda. Kyle Hanyes retired the next three to work out of the jam.

Jorge Marban (2 IP) escaped a huge jam in Trenton's half of the seventh. The Thunder put runners at first and third with nobody out, but Marban retired Cave, Castillo and Aaron Judge.

 In the eighth, Simon Mercedes walked three, but fanned Cuvler to end the threat.  Portland put the first two on in the ninth, but Haynes induced a double play and a ground to end the game.

The Sea Dogs are off on Monday and open up a six-game homestand on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field against the Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants affiliate), first pitch is 7:00 PM. RHP Justin Haley (1-6, 5.70) makes his 10th start of the season for Portland. Richmond counters with RHP Joe Biagini (3-3, 1.53).  Pre-Game coverage begins at 6:40 PM on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network.  MILB.TV begins at 6:55 PM.

Trenton, New Jersey  - Trenton's (26-24) Eric Ruth (3-0) fired seven strong innings and his offense collected 12 hits, defeating the Portland Sea Dogs 8-1 on Saturday night at Arm & Hammer Park. The two teams will settle the 3-game series with a rubber game on Sunday afternoon.

Trenton scored four unearned runs off Mike Augliera in the second inning. Dante Bichette reached on an error by 3B Jonathan Roof, scoring the first run of the game. Following the error, the Thunder had 4 straight singles, receiving RBI's from Cito Culver, Jake Cave and Ali Castillo.

The Thunder extended their lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Aaron Judge - his 8th of the season.  Augliera (2-8) suffered the loss for Portland, lasting 4 innings on 8 hits, 6 runs (2 earned) with one walk and 6 strikeouts.

Portland got on the board in the seventh inning with two outs off Ruth. Aneury Tavarez drew a walk and scored on a double by Blake Tekotte. Ruth worked seven innings, giving up 5 hits, one run, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts to earn the win.

Trenton scored two in the seventh inning off Kyle Kraus when Danny Oh delivered a two-run single. Portland cut the lead to 8-2 in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Jantzen Witte (team-leading 35th RBI).

Marco Hernandez continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 with a double. Tekotte (2-for-2) is now 6-for-10 in the series. Robby Scott worked a perfect eighth and is scoreless in his last 5 outings.

The Sea Dogs and Trenton Thunder (Yankees affiliate) conclude their 3-game weekend series this afternoon beginning at 1:00 PM. Senators Collins, King Announce Highway Investment in Waterville

Washington D.C - U.S. Senators Susan Collins, Chairman of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, and Angus King announced today that the Economic Development Administration (EDA) will award the Maine Department of Transportation $992,687 in funding to support the construction of the Interstate 95 Trafton Road Interchange in Waterville.

This funding will also support the realignment of an adjacent roadway to provide unobstructed access to existing industrial facilities in Waterville.

“This important investment will strengthen our infrastructure in Waterville, facilitating economic development across our state,” the Senators said in a joint statement. “Investments in infrastructure are investments in improved public safety and economic prosperity, the lifeblood of our communities.”

According to the EDA, during construction and upon completion of this project, an estimated 325 jobs could be created.

Governor to Visit Lisbon for Next Town Hall‏

Lisbon, Maine - Governor Paul R. LePage announced he will hold his next town hall meeting on Tuesday, June 2 in Lisbon, where he will answer questions about his comprehensive tax reform and relief plan.

The Open Door Baptist Church will host the town hall from 6 to 7 p.m. on June 2. The meeting is open to the public and will be held in the auditorium at 26 Gartley St., Lisbon.

The town hall meeting will focus on the LePage Tax Cut Plan, which is a bold initiative to make Maine a more attractive place for young families, retirees, veterans and job creators.

Most recently, Governor LePage asked Legislative leadership for bipartisan support for his bill to amend the Maine Constitution to eliminate the State income tax. Only Republican leaders stepped up to endorse it. Democrat leaders are opposed to eliminating the income tax.

CMMC photography exhibit

Lewiston, Maine - The Central Maine Medical Center Woman’s Hospital Association (WHA) is featuring the works of two photographers at its Rotating Art Gallery at CMMC.


Photographs by Joan Cyr and Andrea Lee Segars will be on display in the hospital’s lobby main corridor, near the 60 High Street entrance, from June 4 through July 2.


Joan Cyr is a nature and landscape photographer, who has exhibited at local art walks, Lewiston-Auburn businesses, and at the BRAF Gallery in Boothbay where the juried Maine Photography Show is held each spring. One of her photographs, “Auburn Riverwalk,” was featured in the December issue of “Down East”, a Maine magazine. Cyr has enjoyed photographing the natural beauty of Maine and New England for over 20 years.


“Photography to me is the ability to take moments in time and stop them for all to enjoy,” say Segar. “After years of debating, I finally took the leap into starting my own photography business in June 2010. I am a portrait and wedding photographer. I feel honored that they have allowed me to be part of their family for a day and if I am lucky enough for years to come.”


The artwork on display may be purchased through the WHA Gift Shop, located adjacent to the Main Lobby at CMMC. A percentage of sale proceeds benefit CMMC.

A 7-run seventh does the trick, 'Dogs win 12-10 at Trenton

Trenton, New Jersey  -  The Sea Dogs trailed 9-5 after 5 innings, but scored a season-high 7 runs in the seventh, rallying back to beat the Trenton Thunder, 12-10 on Friday night at Arm & Hammer Park.

Portland had a season-high 18 hits, receiving a multi-hit game from 6 of 9 starters. Keury De La Cruz finished 4-for-6, 4 RBI, delivering the game-winning,  two-run double with the game tied at nine in the seventh.

Mike McCarthy (4-3) relieved Luis Diaz in the third inning, pitching 3.2 innings on on 3 hits, one run and 4 strikeouts to earn the win. Pat Light earned his third save of the season, working 1.1 innings and 2 strikeouts. The game ended on a diving catch in right field by Aneury Tavarez with a runner at first base.

Trenton reliever Chris Smith (1-1) suffered the loss for Trenton, yielding all 7 runs in the seventh in just 2/3 of an inning.

During Portland's huge rally in the seventh, Marco Hernandez (3-for-6, 3 RBI tied a franchise record with 3 doubles) knocked in two runs with a double. Jonathan Roof had an infield-RBI single and Oscar Tejeda tied the game with a single. Following De La Cruz's game-winning hit, Luis Martinez doubled home the 12th run.

Trenton added a run in the eighth inning on Taylor Dugas' RBI double off Madison Younginer (hold).

Portland struck in the first with two outs against Caleb Smith (6 IP, 12 H, 5 R, 3 ER). Hernandez led off the game with a double and scored on a two-out single by De La Cruz.  Trenton responded against Luis Diaz (2.1 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 4 BB, 0 SO). Jake Cave led off Trenton's first with a single, stole second base, and scored on Aaron Judge's ground out.

Hernandez would strike again with a double, knocking home Tavarez (2-for-4) in the second inning, giving Portland a 2-1 lead.  Once again, the Thunder would respond, scoring three times to take a 4-2 lead. All Castillo and Cito Culver had RBI singles - Francisco Arcia had a run-scoring ground out.

De La Cruz would bring the 'Dogs within a run at 4-3 in the third, nailing an RBI double to score Jantzen Witte (2-for-6).  Trenton would counter once again, scoring 4 times off Diaz and knocking him out of the game, and taking an 8-3 lead. Arcia and Castillo had 2-run singles.

The Sea Dogs would make it five straight innings with a single run, cutting the deficit to 8-5 after 4 1/2 innings.  In the fourth, Blake Tekotte hit a solo-homer to right field and David Chester delivered a sacrifice fly to right field.

Judge knocked home his second run of the game, nailing an RBI single off Mike McCarthy in the fifth, giving Trenton a 9-5 lead.

Portland improved to 3-1 on the roadtrip, and can clinch a winning May with a victory on Saturday night.
