Maine DEP Issues Air Quality Concerns for June 30 - July 7, 2018

AUGUSTA, June 29, 2018 — A significant heat event has been building and will be impacting the northeast for the next 7 to 8 days.  At the same time, conditions will allow precursors to form ozone very efficiently in the region.  The airmass will not move out of the region until sometime next weekend.

Maine will not escape some effects of this episode.  Currently, Maine DEP Air Quality Meteorologists do not expect that ozone will be unhealthy every day.  In fact, Saturday’s forecast is for Moderate levels of ozone along the coast from Kittery through Acadia NP and the Western Interior region while Sunday is expected to be Good.

However, even moderate levels of ozone combined with moderate levels of particle pollution in addition to heat and humidity will compound the effects of each.  Therefore, individuals should evaluate their health and possible sensitivities and prepare for this event to reduce the likelihood and/or severity of health impacts.  It is important to remember that people living in northern climates are less acclimated to heat and therefore can be impacted at lower temperatures.  Everyone is encouraged to check the Air Quality Forecast daily during this prolonged episode.

At elevated ozone levels, children, healthy adults who exert themselves, and individuals suffering from a respiratory disease such as asthma, bronchitis or COPD can experience reduced lung function and irritation.  When this happens, individuals may notice a shortness of breath, coughing, throat irritation, and/or experience an uncomfortable sensation in their chest.

Some actions you can take to protect your health during periods of unhealthy air quality include:

Adjusting your schedule to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon.

Please consult the Maine CDC website for information on the health impacts of extreme heat and appropriate actions to take (http://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/environmental-health/heat/).

The Maine CDC Asthma Prevention and Control Program has asthma information available at their web site: http://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/population-health/mat/index.htm

For more information on asthma control visit EPA's Web site www.epa.gov/asthma  to find information about asthma triggers and lessons on asthma management. In addition to those in a sensitive group, sports coaches, elder care workers, nurses and others who are responsible for the welfare of people impacted by poor air quality are urged to use one of the listed tools to follow the Air Quality Forecast:
Air Quality Forecast page: http://www.maine.gov/dep/air/ozone/ which has links to:

Kimberly A. Scott Named Executive Director Of The Camden Conference

CAMDEN — Kimberly A. Scott of Northport has been named executive director of the Camden Conference, Bruce J. Cole, president announced June 28th.

The Camden Conference, now in its 31st year, is a citizens' forum in Midcoast Maine, committed to fostering informed discourse on key global issues.  Kimberly will be the first executive director of the organization. The Conference is a dynamic volunteer organization offering an array of educational programs on a year-round basis, including its flagship event – the annual Camden Conference - that brings together world leaders on a given topic to share knowledge and insight with over 1000 participants.
“We are delighted to name Kimberly Scott as our Executive Director,” said Bruce Cole, president of the Camden Conference.  “Over the past decade our education and community events programs have more than doubled as has our audience for the big February Conference.  Kim brings the skills and strengths to work with dozens of volunteers to insure that our year-round programs are of the highest quality.”

Kimberly joined the Camden Conference in the spring of 2008 – inspired by her volunteering at the February Conference of that same year. Serving first as administrative director, she was named conference director in 2013.

“I am honored to be named the first executive director of the Camden Conference and to work with so many dedicated and talented community members who comprise this unique volunteer organization”, said Kimberly. “Together, we further a mission that has never been more relevant.”

Before joining the organization, she held a series of positions in legal, non-profit, and consensus building arenas, leading local communities, advocacy groups, and public agencies at all levels of government in Maine and Massachusetts. These included serving as Assistant Attorney General in Penobscot, Hancock, and Washington Counties, Executive Director of Community Mediation Services in Augusta - the nation's first organization to offer mediation to providers and consumers of mental health services, and, in private practice, leading consensus building processes for high profile environmental disputes involving Federal Superfund Hazardous Waste sites at former military bases in Massachusetts.

An Ohio native, Kimberly has lived in the Midcoast since 1999. She is a member of the Bar in both Maine and Massachusetts, and received her Juris Doctor from the University of Toledo College of Law. When not working, Kim enjoys traveling to the far reaches of the world to trek in Nepal, Peru, and Tanzania, as well as closer to home in the Camden Hills.

The 2019 Camden Conference, “Is This China’s Century?” will be held next year, February 22 - 24.  Further information may be found at www.camdenconfrence.org

Hammond Lumber Company Acquires EBS

Hammond Lumber Company Acquires EBS Building Supplies, 10 Locations

Maine family-owned company now has 800+ employees and 21 locations

ELLSWORTH, Maine - Hammond Lumber Company (Hammond) announced today that it has acquired EBS Building Supplies (EBS), a lumber and building materials company, and all 10 of their coastal locations. The announcement was made today at the location in Ellsworth. Hammond, a third generation, family-owned company since 1953 with more than $250 million in sales, now has more than 800 employees and 21 locations. The company is the largest LBM dealer in Maine and one of the largest independent LBM dealers in the country.

Hammond Lumber Company employees and family take a photo at the location in Ellsworth after the acquisition announcement on June 27. From left to right. First row: Sarah Krizo, Max Krizo, Sam Krizo, Verna Hammond, Skip Hammond, Deb Thing, Bob Thing. Second row: Steve Smith, Rod Wiles, Don Hammond, Hannah Colson, Lenny Lawson, Mike Hammond, Dwayne Webber. Third row: Matt Masse, Bob Jancewicz, Fred Perkins, Peter Economy.

With the acquisition, Hammond acquires all 10 EBS locations, including Bar Harbor, Belfast, Blue Hill, Bucksport, Calais, Camden, Cherryfield, Ellsworth, Machias and Rockland. The locations and more than 300 employees will continue to operate with a retail hardware-oriented focus and sell lumber and building materials.

"As we celebrate our 65th anniversary, we are excited to begin a new chapter in our history and look forward to welcoming the EBS employees to our family company. We have a tremendous amount of respect for the company and the success of their leadership and employees over the past 48 years, that all started when Austin Goodyear founded the company. From a business perspective, their 10 locations along the coast are a great addition and a perfect geographic fit for us to serve more customers across the state and specifically eastern Maine. I also want to recognize the EBS leadership team for their work and commitment that has led to this announcement, they have been a pleasure to work with," said Mike Hammond, president/CEO of Hammond.

Hammond, based in Belgrade, is the largest LBM dealer in Maine and ranks among the top-20 LBM dealers in the country. Prior to the acquisition, Hammond had 11 locations in Auburn, Bangor, Belgrade, Boothbay Harbor, Brunswick, Damariscotta, Fairfield, Farmington, Greenville, Portland and Skowhegan. The company was recently named the top Maine company in sales on the Prosales Top 100 List, ranked 36th in the country. The company carries a full line of forest products, and specializes in eastern white pine and saws more than 6,500,000 board feet each year.

Ellsworth Builder's Supply, Inc., was established in 1959 as a subsidiary of the Ellsworth Falls Lumber Co., Inc. The company employs more than 300 employees and was recently ranked 80th on the Prosales Top 100 list as sales have grown steadily to more than $80 million.

"Our leadership felt this was the right decision and is a win-win, most importantly because it is a great opportunity for employees to become part of the Hammond family. We share the same values and place a tremendous focus on providing extraordinary customer service. In many ways, it will be business as usual," said Dwayne Webber, former president of EBS and current Hammond employee.

Hammond will continue to employ the EBS employees bringing the total number of Hammond employees to more than 800. As part of the announcement, Hammond plans to close the company's Pemaquid and Wilton locations and reassign employees to the Farmington and Damariscotta stores.

The 11 current Hammond locations in Auburn, Bangor, , Belgrade, Boothbay Harbor, Brunswick, Cherryfield, Damariscotta, Ellsworth, Fairfield, Farmington, Greenville, Portland and Skowhegan will continue to operate with a pro-oriented lumber and building materials supply focus.

Hammond carries a full line of forest products and specializes in eastern white pine and has grown to be one of the largest independent building material retailers in the northeast. Don Hammond, vice president of Hammond has 51 years of experience and leads the manufacturing operations and his son, Mike Hammond, president/CEO of Hammond, oversees all other aspects of the company.

Anchor Peabody was the exclusive financial advisor to Hammond in the transaction, provided due diligence and transaction execution support, and will help Hammond post-transaction with the integration of EBS. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

BREAKING NEWS: Knox County Sheriff's Office Saves Two

BREAKING NEWS: Warren, Maine - At approximately 10:30 p.m. last night, Knox County Regional Communications Center advised deputies that they were starting rescue units to Finntown Rd. in Warren for a report of two unresponsive males in a vehicle.  They were also advised that it was reported the two had been using drugs.  Deputy Arthur Smith arrived and found one male laying face down in the road and a female attempting chest compressions on him.  The other male was sitting upright in a vehicle.  Deputy Smith administered his “Narcan” that all deputies carry to both individuals until Deputy Alicia Averill arrived and Deputy Smith had to administer her dosage as well to the two.  A short time later, ambulances from Warren and Waldoboro arrived and took over care of the two males that had become responsive at this time.  Both males were transported to Pen-Bay Medical Center and shortly after arrival left the hospital against medical advice.

Deputies have talked to the witnesses at the scene and an investigation will be pursued into the drug use.

Maine Lobster Festival Announces 2018 Grand Marshal

Rockland, Maine - The Maine Lobster Festival is excited to announce the United States Coast Guard Station Rockland as the 2018 Grand Marshal in the Big Parade.

The USCG Rockland Personnel have been volunteers at the Maine Lobster Festival for many years; volunteering at the cooker, serving up lobster in the food tent, escorting our Sea Princesses at the Sea Goddess Coronation, providing security during entertainment, and marching their Color Guard in the Big Parade. The Maine Lobster Festival is honored to celebrate them as our Grand Marshal. The day of the parade also happens to be the U.S. Coast Guard’s 228th birthday.

In addition to being Festival volunteers, Coast Guard personnel are also active throughout the year volunteering with Rockland Main Street to build the famous Lobster Trap Tree that kicks off the Festival of Lights Celebration, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and the Pope Memorial Animal Shelter, reading in our local grade schools, and coaching for Special Olympics.

The United States Coast Guard, one of the country's five armed services, is a unique agency of the federal government. They trace their history back to August 4, 1790, when the first Congress authorized the construction of ten vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and protect the collection of the federal revenue. Known variously as the Revenue Marine and the Revenue Cutter Service, they expanded in size and responsibilities as the nation grew.

In times of peace they operate as part of the Department of Homeland Security, serving as the nation's front-line agency for enforcing our laws at sea, protecting our coastline and ports, and saving lives. In times of war, or on direction of the President, they serve under the Navy Department.

The Big Parade will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 4, on Rockland’s Main Street. This year it will feature the Grand Marshal, the Sea Princesses and their escorts, and the newly crowned 2018 Maine Sea Goddess. King Neptune and his court will also be making an appearance. Bands, marching units, and drill teams, along with different floats will be there as well to ensure an entertaining and lively parade.

About the Maine Lobster Festival

With five days of fun and feasting on the fabulous coast of Maine, the Maine Lobster Festival attracts thousands of people to the Midcoast region and has a long tradition of giving back to the local community. In recent years, the festival committee has given more than $500,000 to Midcoast Regional Child Development Services, Trekkers, Meals on Wheels, and many other organizations. The 2018 Festival will be held August 1-5.
