WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College women's soccer team was defeated
by Saint Joseph's College on Monday night in a non-conference game at
Smith Field.
The teams combined for three goals in the opening five minutes of the
game. The Monks struck first on a goal by Hannah LeBlanc less than
three minutes into the contest. Haley DaGraca added the second Monks
goal a minute later to bring the score to 2-0. Bronte Howorth
answered right back for the Terriers. Howorth collected a rebound off
of her own shot and buried the ball to cut the Monks' lead in half.
The Monks brought their lead back to two goals with 36 minutes left
in the half. DaGraca touched a pass to Colleen Sheehan who fired a shot
from inside the 18 and into. The shot tipped off the outstretched glove
of Terriers goalkeeper Paige Leary but rolled into the back of the net for the third Monk goal. Sheehan and DaGraca connected again in the 22nd minute to push the lead to 4-1 where it would stay until halftime.
St. Joe's extended their lead to 5-1 five minutes into the second
half. Sarah Comtois drove a free kick on goal that got over the head of
Thomas keeper Ashley Gooden and into the back of the net.
The Monks added three more goals in the remainder of the half to bring the final score to 8-1.
Michelle Cunha recorded three saves in goal for the Monks and earned
the win. Leary was tagged with the loss, recording ten saves. Gooden
relieved Leary in net for the second half, and recorded seven saves.
The Terriers return to the pitch on Saturday, October 3 when they
travel to New England College for a North Atlantic Conference match at
2:30 pm.
