FRANK 106.9 to broadcast 34 regular season High School Basketball Games

Rockland, Maine – FRANK 106.9, WBQX- FM will broadcast local high school basketball for an 8th straight year beginning on Friday December 8th when the Camden Hills Windjammers travel to Lincoln Academy to battle the Eagles in a boy’s matchup. Veteran broadcaster Don Shields will again lead the coverage and will be joined by Terry Spear and Chris Seavey for the 34 game regular season schedule that will include Oceanside, Medomak Valley, Camden Hills, Belfast, Lincoln Academy, Searsport, Wiscasset and Mt. View High Schools. The station is also planning to broadcast selected games involving these same schools during the Northern Maine Classes A and B as well as Southern Maine Class C and D Tournament from Augusta and Bangor this upcoming February.


Stan Bennett, Operations Manager for Binnie Media Maine, is pleased that FRANK 106.9 will be airing the games again this year. “People are passionate about High School Basketball in Mid Coast Maine and the response to our coverage from fans and sponsors has been outstanding.”


Shields, who is also the voice of the University of Maine Women’s Basketball team, has been the voice of Midcoast Maine High School sports since 1985, during which time he has called more than 1300 high school games. Spear has been covering basketball for nearly 2 decades in the Midcoast, Biddeford and Bath-Brunswick markets. Seavey, a former Rockland District High School Standout, has more than decade of on-air experience.

Stellar First Half Paces Maine over Quinnipiac, 78-72

HAMDEN, Conn. – A dominating offensive and defensive performance in the first 20 minutes proved to be just enough, as the Maine Black Bears outlasted the Quinnipiac Bobcats, 78-72 at TD Bank Sports Center on Sunday afternoon. Vernon Lowndes Jr. shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, including a school-record breaking 5-for-5 from 3-point range, to lead the Black Bears in Maine's first win of the season.

Lowndes Jr. finished with 20 points, a game-high nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 25 minutes played. The Charleston, S.C. product broke the Maine school-record for 3-point field goal percentage in a single game, that was held by four different Black Bears.

The record was most recently set by Fred Meeks in a game against Hampton on November 14, 1998 who shot 4-of-4 from 3-point range. The transfer from USC Salkehatchie entered today's game only playing a combined 15 minutes in three games this season.

Head coach Bob Walsh was impressed by what he saw from Lowndes Jr. today.

"Vernon was terrific," said Walsh. "He brings an athleticism and an energy that can really boost us when he is on. He struggled to get comfortable here so far. I haven't done a good enough job of finding the right buttons to push to get the most out of him. To come off of a game that he didn't play, and be ready to go and help us like that, says a lot about his character. He's talented, he can score, he can rebound, and hopefully we can get him to the point where he's consistent and he can help us every night."

Lowndes Jr. gave credit to his teammates and coaches following the win.

"The coaches got us riled up before game," said Lowndes Jr. "We have struggled in the early part of the season. We wanted to come out today with fire and carry over what we do in practice to the game. We brought that fire today and fed off of each other."

The Black Bears (1-5) shot 52.9 percent (27-for-51) from the field against Quinnipiac (1-5). Coming into today's game, the Black Bears' previous season-high from the field was 38.3 percent (23-for-60) against Boston University last Wednesday.

Maine's defense held the Bobcats to shoot 35.5 percent (22-for-62) from the field. The Black Bears drained 14-of-23 (60.9 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc, while only allowing the Bobcats to muster 30.3 percent (10-for-33) from long-range.

Aaron Calixte finished with 18 total points, with 11 coming in the final 20 minutes. The redshirt-junior came up clutch late in the game, draining six free throws on six attempts in the final minute of the second half. He finished the contest sinking 8-of-9 shots from the charity-stripe.

Danny Evans and Ilker Er also reached double-figures in scoring, adding 10-points apiece.

Maine never trailed, starting the game on a 26-7 run. The Black Bears kept the pressure offensively and defensively, increasing its lead to as high as 46-20 with 44 seconds left in the half.

The Black Bear offense was on fire in the first 20 minutes, shooting 10-14 (71.4 percent) from 3-point range, while nailing 18-of-28 shots from the field (64.3 percent). On the 18 field goals made in the first 20 minutes, 14 of them were assisted. An even seven Black Bears registered a 3-pointer and an assist in the first half.

While the offense put up impressive statistics, the defense was just as impactful. The Black Bears held the Bobcats to just 7-for-23 shooting (30.4 percent), and recorded five steals to take a 46-23 advantage into halftime. Maine only allowed three field goals on Quinnipiac's first 21 possessions.

After halftime, Quinnipiac outscored Maine 49-32 in the second half, and cut Maine's deficit to just five with 36 seconds remaining, but Calixte converted his final two free throw attempts of the game to seal Maine's 78-72 victory over the Bobcats.

Chaise Daniels led the Bobcats with a game-high 24 points, while Andrew Robinson added 17.

Maine entered the game struggling from distance, shooting 24 percent from 3-point range in five games this season. After today's game, it jumped over six percent to 30 percent.

Including Lowndes Jr.'s 20 points, Maine held the advantage in bench points over Quinnipiac by a 38-24 margin.

The Black Bears will continue their road trip this Tuesday, when Maine battles BIG EAST foe Georgetown at 8:30 p.m. The game will be broadcasted nationally on Fox Sports 1 from Capital One Arena.

Spellman's 38 points lead Bobcats past UNE 107-103

LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore Jeff Spellman scored a career-high 38 points as the Bates men's basketball team overcame cold outside shooting and the University of New England's frenetic style of play to defeat the Nor'easters 107-103 Sunday evening in the Bobcats' home opener at Alumni Gym.

Bates (3-1) won its third straight game despite making a season-low 1-of-19 shots from three-point range (.053), while UNE (1-4) made 14-of-46 from beyond the arc (.304). But Bates outrebounded UNE 59-40 and shot an even .500 (42-84) from the field overall, while limiting UNE to a .434 team field-goal percentage (36-83).

Junior guard Eli Frater (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and first-year swingman James Mortimer (Franklin, Mass.) also registered career-highs in scoring, with Frater making 7-of-9 shots en route to 17 points and Mortimer adding 13 points. Sophomore guard Nick Gilpin (Hampden, Maine) totaled nine assists and eight rebounds, and junior guard Max Hummel (Glastonbury, Conn.) added nine points and nine rebounds.

UNE senior Gavin Dibble led four Nor'easters in double figures with 14 points. Jordan Bagshaw, Drew Coveney and Daron Hoges Jr. added 11 points apiece.

The Nor'easters forced a frantic tempo for almost the entire game, consistently shooting early in the shot clock and employing a full-court press on defense that allowed the Bobcats a bevy of layups -- the hosts totaled 82 points in the paint. UNE substituted entire lineups every few minutes: 18 players saw action and only Dibble (24 minutes) logged more than 16 minutes in the game.

The game featured 13 ties and 23 lead changes, and the Nor'easters' 16-8 and 20-12 leads inside the first five minutes represented the largest margin of the game.

UNE built the early advantage as Bagshaw made two 3-pointers while Ryan Matthews and Drew Muniz made one apiece. But an 8-0 Bates run over the next two minutes, with two layups by Spellman (Boston, Mass.) and a tip-in by Mortimer, quickly tied the game. Bates first-year Malik Velmar's (Yorktown, Va.) foul shot made it 58-58, eighth and final tie of the first half, and Hummel converted a three-point play as time expired on the period, for a 61-58 Bates edge at the break.

Bates outscored UNE 46-18 in the paint for the period, but UNE's 9-of-22 shooting from three-point territory had the teams neck and neck. Dibble led UNE with 12 points in the half; for Bates, Spellman (14), Mortimer (12) and Frater had all reached double figures.

UNE opened the second half with another flurry of threes: Bagshaw, Kyle Frank, Matt Hobbs, and Sean Walsh all made triples to give the Nor'easters a 74-69 lead at the 16:15 mark. Bates tied the game back up at 78-78 after consecutive layups by Frater and a free throw by junior forward Brandon Galloway (Fort Washington, Md.), and the difference between the teams stayed under five points the rest of the way.

The scoring slowed down over the final five minutes, but UNE outscored Bates 9-3 from the 6:07 mark to 3:48, a run capped as Coveney kicked out to Andrew Marcelino for a three, then followed a Bates turnover with a jump shot assisted by Marcelino for a 101-98 UNE lead. But after a Nore'aster turnover and a Bates defensive stop, Gilpin fed Spellman for a fast-break layup, making it 101-100 with 2:06 remaining. After a UNE timeout and a Dibble miss, Bates sophomore Tom Coyne (Falmouth, Maine) fed Galloway for a layup and a 102-101 Bates lead. UNE's sixth consecutive miss was followed by a Coyne free throw with 29.9 seconds to go.

Dibble was stripped in the lane with 21 seconds to go, and Spellman drained a pair of free throws for a 105-101 lead. Coveney made it a two-point game again with a layup with 11 seconds to go, but Gilpin again found Spellman for a layup with seven seconds left. A final missed three by UNE ended the game.

Bates next hosts Husson in a non-conference game on Dec. 5 at 8pm.

Spellman's 38 points were the most by a Bates player since Mike Boornazian scored 39 at Connecticut College in 2014. The sophomore was 0-for-5 from three-point territory but shot 16-for-25 overall, for the most field goals by a Bobcat since at least the 1999-00 season.

Bowdoin Men's Basketball Stays Perfect, Knocks Off Seventh-Ranked Babson

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's basketball team had four players in double figures en route to a 80-71 win over seventh-ranked Babson on Sunday afternoon in Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2014 while the defending national champion Beavers fall to 3-2 on the season.

Game Highlights

• Bowdoin never trailed, getting out to a 5-0 start and maintaining a single-digit lead throughout most of the opening half.
• The Polar Bears held a 32-24 lead with under three minutes to go in the first period, but used a 7-0 run, capped by a Zavier Rucker running lay-up, to take a 41-24 advantage.
• Brandon Johnson hit a three-pointer on Babson's final possession of the half to cut the Bowdoin lead to 41-27 at intermission.
• The Polar Bears extended their lead to 19 points early in the second half, using a 5-0 run out of the gate on a Liam Farley three-pointer and Hugh O'Neil layup.
• Babson mounted a furious rally, scoring the next ten points to cut the lead back to single digits following a Jacks basket and free throw, 46-37.
• David Reynolds was huge in the second half for Bowdoin, hitting consecutive three-pointers to keep the Beavers at bay.
• The Bowdoin led bounced between 9-13 points until the three minute mark when another Jacks lay-in cut the lead to seven, 71-64, with 2:38 on the clock.
• The Polar Bears put the game on ice late, hitting 7-8 free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.

Bobcats hang on for result versus UNE

LEWISTON, Maine -- In a contest that featured 23 lead-changes and 13 ties, Bates College emerged with a 107-103 men's basketball victory over the University of New England on Sunday evening (Nov. 26) at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Bobcats (3-1) were led by a career-best 38 points from Jeff Spellman, who went 16-of-25 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds. Eli Frater and James Mortimer tallied 17 and 13 points, respectively, in support. Nick Gilpin had nine assists and eight boards; Max Hummel secured a game-high nine caroms as the hosts totaled a 59-40 advantage on the glass.

Bates overcome a 1-for-19 performance from behind the arc (5.3%) by converting 63 percent of its two-point attempts, and out-scored UNE by five (22-17) at the charity stripe.

The Nor'easters (1-4) received 14 points out of Gavin Dibble, and 11 more from Drew Coveney, Daron Hoges, Jr., and Jordan Bagshaw. Coveney also put up five assists and four steals; Drew Patno corralled a team-best six rebounds.

UNE connected on 14-of-46 tries from deep (30.4%) on the night, but made just 21 percent (5-of-24) following halftime.

On three consecutive possessions in the early-going of the 1st, the visitors established their largest lead of the match (16-8, 18-10, 20-12). Before intermission, Bates took its biggest cushion (57-51), and eventually settled on a 61-58 edge while shooting 56 percent to UNE's 49 percent.

Both sides cooled off a bit from the field in the 2nd, although Spellman accounted for 24 of his team's 46 in the period.

Andrew Marcelino sparked a quick five for UNE that set the Nor'easters ahead, 101-98, with 3:48 to go, but the next seven points went to the Bobcats, capped by two freebies from Spellman with 19 seconds left. Coveney got two right back to cut the gap in half (105-103), but Spellman sealed it for the home squad with a fast-break layup on the opposite end.

Other than a brief 74-69 UNE lead during the initial stages of the final stanza, the spread was no more than four points either way in the closing 20 minutes.

The Nor'easters will prepare to begin Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) in Biddeford against Gordon College.

Scott nets lone goal in UNE's overtime triumph against Salem State

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Jessie Scott scored with 1:31 gone in overtime to lift the University of New England women's ice hockey team past Salem State University, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 26) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

On Tuesday, the sides went a full 65 minutes to a 1-1 draw back in Massachusetts, and again needed extra time in this one, despite UNE holding a 38-16 advantage in shots through regulation.

The deciding sequence began when Jessica Tolzman collected a rebound at the left post and curled to send it up the boards to Julianne Sheehan. Sheehan fed it back towards the crease where Scott's point-blank redirect try was denied, but she managed to chip a second shot attempt up over the shoulder of the goalie into the right side. Scott and Tolzman now share the team-lead in goals (4) through eight games.

Caty Flagg ended with 17 saves for her first career shutout, as the Nor'easters (2-2-4) secured a win for the first time since their season-opener.

For the Vikings (0-6-2), Sarah Plourde recorded 40 stops.

UNE will play a pair at Saint Michael's College next weekend, starting with 7:05 face-off on Friday.

Colby Men's hockey gets ready for Bowdoin game with win over Saint Anselm

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Colby College men’s hockey team scored early and late in the first period to take control on the way to a 5-1 victory over Saint Anselm College in the Bowdoin/Colby Face-Off Classic.

The Mules improve to 2-2 overall heading into Friday's big rivalry game with Bowdoin at 7 p.m. at Alfond Rink. Saint Anselm, led by former Colby head coach Jim Tortorella, dropped to 4-4.

 

Game Highlights

  *   Colby opened the game with a quick goal 1:18 into play. Andrew Reis (pictured) took a feed from Michael Rudolf and wristed a shot from the left point over the glove of Shane Joyce.
  *   Joyce made a pair of big breakaway saves moments later, stopping a two-on-none and a breakaway down the right from Kienan Scott.
  *   Rudolf doubled the Mules lead with 48 seconds remaining in the period, roofing a shot from mid-range from Phil Klitirinos.
  *   Twenty seconds into a second period power play for the Mules, passes connected from Scott to J.P. Schuhlen on the left post and back across the goal face to Cam MacDonald for the score made it 3-0.
  *   Ryan Spillane put the Hawks on the board with 3:25 left in the middle frame. Jeremy Carignan skated down the slot and slid a pass left to Spillane, who launched the puck top right corner.
  *   Scott rifled a shot wide right midway through the final period, with the puck rebounding off the boards and back to the left post. MacDonald cleaned up the rebound for a 4-1 Colby lead.
   *   Saint Anselm pulled its goalie for the final seconds of play and Nick O’Connor pulled the puck off the left boards and tallied an empty netter.

By the numbers
  *   Sean Lawrence stopped 27 shots for the Mules.
  *   Colby went 1-for-2 on the power play while the Hawks were 0-for-3.

Alpine skiers Schoepke, Hust spend weekend as forerunners at World Cup event

KILLINGTON, Vt. -- For the second straight year, the Colby College women's alpine team had two skiers as forerunners at the Audi FIS Women's Ski World Cup at Killington Ski Resort on Saturday and Sunday.

Colby sophomore Sandra Schoepke (Stowe, Vt.) and first-year Rosie Hust (Long Lake, Minn.) helped out. Schoepke did the second run in Saturday's giant slalom and the second run of Sunday's slalom, while Hust did both runs of Sunday's slalom in front of 10,000 fans.

 

Forerunners are non-competing skiers who ski the course before the event starts. The forerunners set the line, allow officials to set their systems, and can provide course condition information to officials. 

 

The races at Killington went so well last year that the resort will host the World Cup event through 2018. Colby four-time All-American Mardi Haskell and sophomore Jessica Reinhart were forerunners at the event last year. 

 

Micaela Shiffrin of the United States won the slalom for the second straight year and took second in the giant slalom.
