Volleyball Falls in Saturday’s Non-Conference Doubleheader

KEENE, New Hampshire – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball fell to Keene State and St. Michael's on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader.

Game One: Keene State 3 – Maine Maritime 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-22)

The Mariners scored eight-straight points highlighted by two service aces by Molly Marcotte (Woonsocket, R.I.) to bring the Mariners within two points but the Owls fought back and took the 1-0 lead in the match. The Owls edged out the Mariners in the second set to take the 2-0 lead. In the third set, Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) set Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) up for a kill to minimize the Owl lead to 23-21 but Keene State put together a run sparked by two Angela Silveri kills to take the victory.

Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) led the Mariners with a double-double, 11 kills and 15 digs, while Clark ended the match with a game-high 18 digs and seven kills. Spaulding recorded 28 assists while adding a team-best three service aces.

Silveri led the Owls with 12 kills and 17 digs, while Christine Hadfield added 10 kills and Alexis Michal added a team-high 18 assists.

Game Two: St. Michael's 3 – Maine Maritime 1 (25-15, 25-12, 21-25, 25-18)

In another back-and-forth battle, the Mariners went on a four-point rally to cut St. Michael's lead to 13-12, but the Purple Knights came back to claim the first set. In the second set, the Purple Knights responded to the 12-9 Mariners' lead by scoring 16-straight points to take a 2-0 set lead. The Mariners used a six-point run in the middle of the third set to take the win, forcing a fourth set. The Mariners outscored St. Michael's 8-2 late in the fourth set, but fell 25-18.

O'Neal racked up another double-double performance with 10 kills and 12 digs, while Clark led the Mariners with 16 digs, and Spaulding added 24 assists and 14 digs.

Kelsey Flaherty recorded a double-double for St. Michael's with 10 kills and 17 digs, as teammate Catie Weller recorded 24 assists and eight digs, and Natalie Moore added a game-high 21 digs.

The Mariners fall to 8-7 overall and will return to action next Saturday when they host Castleton University and Green Mountain College in North Atlantic Conference battles.
