ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine Field Hockey Team defeated
Northeastern University Sunday afternoon 2-1. With this win, Maine
improves their record to 9-2 on the season. Northeastern drops to 3-7 on
the year.
Emma Cochran (Surrey, British Columbia) started in goal for the Black Bears, which was her sixth start of the season.
Sydney Veljacic
(Coquitlam, British Columbia) was able to clean up the rebound shot in
front of the
cage and scored the first goal of the game, it was her
eighth of the season. The assist came from Casey Crowley (New Plymouth, New Zealand) and gave the Black Bears a 1-0 advantage.
Cochran saw a lot of action in the first half saving four.
Seconds before the end of the first half, the Huskies were able to
find the back of the cage, Vanessa Pryor tied the game at 1-1.
Maine outshot Northeastern 9-6 in the first half, but Northeastern received more penatly corners 4-2.
Emily Corbett (Listowel, Ontario) started the second half in goal for the Black Bears.
Five minutes into the second half, Maine scored off of a rebound by Marissa Shaw (Plymouth, Maine) with the assist coming from Jessica Skillings (Skowhegan, Maine) to give the Black Bears a 2-1 advantage.
Northeastern had an aggressive second half attack shooting nine times
with six on goal. Corbett was able to stop all six shots to preserve
the victory.
Emily Corbett improves her record to 5-1 on the season.
Maine returns to action on Oct. 2 against UMass Lowell to open
America East conference play. The game is in Lowell, Mass. at 6 p.m.
