CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer picked up a thrilling, season-opening victory over Gordon College on Tuesday night, as Susana DeFrank (Temecula, Calif.) headed-in the winning goal in overtime at Ritchie Field.
Mariner keeper Maggie McConkey (Fryeburg, Maine) was tested early in net, coming up with a leaping save with 29 minutes remaining in the first half, on a shot from Jill Kefalas to keep the game scoreless.
Makayla Lewis (Purcellville, Va.) opened up the scoring for Maine Maritime in the 39th minute when she broke away on a pass from Briana Obshatkin (Dedham, Mass.) and found the back of the net past Gordon keeper, McKenzie Dion.
The Mariners hung onto their lead until the 57th minute when Gordon's Kaelyn Silveira beat the outstretched McConkey on a second chance rebound opportunity, to tie it at 1-1.
The two teams remained even, sending the match into overtime until the 94th minute when Morgan Libby's (Brunswick, Maine) free kick rebounded off of Dion's hands and DeFrank headed it in, sending the Mariners to victory in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
McConkey earned the win in net for the Mariners, stopping six shots, while Dion recorded three saves in net for Gordon. DeFrank led Maine Maritime Academy's offensive attack with three shots on goal.
The Mariners (1-0) return to action on Sunday, September 6, when they host Maine-Fort Kent at 2:00 PM. The Fighting Scots (0-1) host Emerson College on Saturday.
