BANGOR, Maine - Nia Arranaga posted six service aces and dished out 13 assists Tuesday, helping Husson defeat Unity (Maine), a USCAA Division II member, in three games by scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-12 in the season opener for both squads. The Eagles win their 14th-straight match against the Rams.
"The girls played really well tonight," Eagles' coach Jodie Fairbank said." We have a very deep bench and can turn to anyone to come in and be productive."
Husson (1-0) scored the first four points of game one and never looked back in the set. A Lindsay Chapman kill gave the Green and Gold a 10-5 edge. The lead swelled to double digits for the first time at 18-8 following a Chapman service ace. An attack error by Emily MacDonald of Unity (0-1) gave the Eagles an eight-point, first game victory.
A Chapman service ace followed by an attack error from Jackie Collins gave the Eagles a 5-1 edge to start game two. Two Jazmyn Atteberry service aces highlighted a brief 4-0 run for the Rams to give them their first lead of the game, 6-5. However, back-to-back kills by Kristen Atwood put the Eagles ahead for good, as the home team tallied 13 of the next 16 points, including six-straight to end the spurt. A Bailey Cote kill made the score 20-10 in favor of the Green and Gold, and a Sarah Wilson kill ended the set.
Unity staked to a 4-0 edge in the final set, but Husson battled back to score five of the next six points and tie the affair on an attack error by Lindsey Morris. After a MacDonald kill made the score 6-5, Fairbank's team rolled off eight-straight points, including three-straight Arranaga service aces, who had four during the run. An Atwood kill put Husson ahead 13-6. A Cote spike increased the Eagles' edge to 20-10. After the Rams scored the next two points, Fairbank's bunch answered with five straight to end the match.
