Bowdoin Splits Matches on Opening Day at MIT Invitational

Michelle Albright had a double-double in both matches Friday at the MIT Invitational

BEVERLY, Massachusetts - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on its first day at the MIT Invitational. The Polar Bears dropped a 3-0 decision to Springfield before rebounding in a 3-2 win over Endicott.

The Polar Bears move to 2-1 on the season with the split while Springfield moves to 5-1 and Endicott falls for the first time this season and drops to 6-1.

Springfield Match

• Against Springfield, the Polar Bears fell by game scores of 25-23, 25-19, 25-16.
• Bowdoin attacked at a higher percentage than Springfield over the first two games, but did not collect a single ace on the day while the Pride put home seven for the day.
• Michelle Albright led Bowdoin with 12 kills and 13 digs. Christy Jewett had 11 and right to go with three blocks.
• First-year Sydney Salle had four blocks
• Quincy Leech totaled 19 assists and 10 digs for the Polar Bears.

Endicott Match

• In an amazingly close match, none of the five games were decided by more than four points - including two-point differentials in games two, three and five. (21-25, 29-27, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13).
• In the decisive fifth game, Endicott took a slim 10-9 lead, but Bowdoin got two consecutive points out of a timeout to regain the lead.
• The teams were tied at 13 apiece before consecutive kill from Salle and Jewett put the game on ice.
• Jewett had 21 kills and 17 digs while Albright and Erika Sklaver added 12 apiece.
• Katie Doherty was outstanding, racking up 36 digs - four shy of her school record - in the win.
• Leech had 56 assists - seven shy of the school mark.

• The Polar Bears will continue play at the MIT Invitational in Cambridge on Saturday. Bowdoin will face two more difficult regional opponents in Babson (1:00 p.m.) and MIT (3:00 p.m.)
