Kyle Martin earns his second save
Manchester, New Hampshire - Sam Travis hit an RBI single in the 10th inning to plate Manuel Margot and the Sea Dogs (51-86) defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (65-69) 4-3 in 10 innings on Wednesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
The Sea Dogs got the scoring started in the top of the first. After a leadoff single by Margot (2-4, RBI, 2 R) and a sac bunt by Tzu-Wei Lin, Travis (3-3, 2 BB, 2 RBI, SB) hit an RBI single to put the Sea Dogs up early with a 1-0 lead.
New Hampshire answered in the bottom of the second inning. After a leadoff walk to Matt Newman by Aaron Wilkerson, Jorge Flores would come up later in the inning and deliver a two-out single to tie the game at one.
Aaron Wilkerson's win streak ended at three, but he still pitched effectively in receiving no decision.
Wilkerson allowed an earned run on five hits in five innings, walking three and striking out four. Wilkerson worked out of jams repeatedly early in the ballgame, stranding six Fisher Cats on the bases over the first three innings.
Taylor Cole was effective as well, holding the Sea Dogs scoreless for five straight innings after Portland's first inning run. Cole remained in the game in the seventh despite having thrown 96 pitches, and after striking out Carlos Asuaje to lead off the frame, Keury De La Cruz (2-4, RBI, BB, R) hit a solo homer to right-center field to give the Sea Dogs a 2-1 lead and run Cole from the game. The home run was Cruz's team leading ninth of the season. Cole allowed two runs on five hits in 6.1 innings while walking two and striking out six.
Dustin Antolin entered the game in relief of Cole and the Sea Dogs loaded the bases against him, eventually adding another run on a sac fly by Margot to score David Chester (2-5, R) and make it 3-1.
Kyle Kaminska entered the game to begin the sixth and worked into the ninth with an opportunity to pick up his first win as a Sea Dog. But after allowing a one-out single, Shane Opitz hit a two-run homer to tie the game at three and send it to extras.
Margot led off the top of the 10th with a single off of Wil Browning (L, 1-1). After Lin sacrificed Margot to second, New Hampshire elected to pitch to Travis with first base open and one out and Travis burned the Fisher Cats with an RBI single to center, scoring Margot and giving the Sea Dogs a 4-3 lead.
Kyle Martin (2-0) closed out the game, but not without tension. After back-to-back one out singles, Martin struck out Jack Murphy but walked pinch hitter Derrick Chung to load the bases. Emilio Guerrero had a chance to tie the game or give the Fisher Cats the walk-off victory, but Martin induced weak contact as Guerrero dribbled one back to the mound and Martin threw out Guerrero at first to end the game. New Hampshire left 11 men on base in the game.
