The two teams were evenly matched throughout the first set, but the Monks used six-straight points to take the 25-22 advantage and a one set lead. In the second half, the Mariners grabbed a commanding 25-16 victory, led by six kills from junior Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.). to even the sets at one each.
In the third set, the Monks once again used six-straight points to outstretch their lead and take the 2-1 advantage, but the Mariners continued to fight, claiming a 25-20 victory in the fourth set, highlighted by four kills from freshmanTess Clark (Spring, Texas).
Entering the fifth set the Mariners held a slim 10-9 lead following a service ace from senior captain Molly Marcotte(Woonsocket, R.I.), but the Monks grabbed a service ace on match point to take the win.
O'Neal finished the night with a team-high 14 kills, while adding 11 digs and four service aces. Clark picked up a team-best 19 digs, 11 kills, and five total blocks. Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) recorded a game-high 40 assists, while also recording two service aces and two block assists.
The Monks (1-0) were led by Felicia Wachowiak, who posted a game-high 17 kills and seven total blocks. Abbie McPhee led all players with 24 digs and chipped in with three service aces.
Maine Maritime Academy (1-1) returns to action on Sunday, September 6th when they will host Maine-Fort Kent for a non-conference double header starting at 11:00 a.m inside of Smith Gym.
