Southern Maine Edges Thomas 5-4 for Second Win

Junior Rikii Demoranville helped the Huskies defeat Thomas College on Thursday with a pair of points.
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Juniors Rikki Demoranville (Madawaska, Maine) and Kara Weiske (Nobleboro, Maine/Lincoln Academy) each won a pair of points as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Thomas College Terriers for the second time this season, 5-4, in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon.

            The win improved the Huskies' record to 2-3 overall.  The winless Terriers dropped their fifth straight match.

            The Huskies grabbed a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches.  Demoranville combined with senior co-captain Emily Estes (Gorham, Maine) for an 8-6 win at second doubles over sophomore Amelia Guimond  (Fort Kent, Maine) and rookie Mia Navarro (Willimantic, Conn/Windham).  Weiske paired with senior Molly Gallagher (South Portland, Maine/Deering) for an 8-1 victory over senior Katie McAllister (Pittston, Maine/Gardiner) and sophomore Rachel Gillis (Ashland, Maine/Ashland District) at third doubles.

            Demoranville came back to take a straight sets singles victory over McAllister at number five, and Weiske down Gillis in straight sets at number six.

            Junior co-captain Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn./Woodland Regional) provided the Huskies with the decisive fifth point with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Guimond at third singles.

            Junior Lindsey Allen (Jay, Maine/Spruce Mountain) and sophomore Olivia Mora (Surry, Maine/Ellsworth) were responsible for three of the four Thomas points.  The duo combined for an 8-6 win at number one doubles, and each had singles victories at number one and two respectively.  In the most competitive match of the day, Allen edged Gallagher 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 at the top of the singles ladder.

            Southern Maine is back in action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) hosting Worcester State University in a Little East Conference match at the Gorham High School courts.  Thomas hosts Lyndon State College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference match on Saturday (1:00 p.m.)
