Boghosian OT Goal Leads Southern Maine Past UNE 2-1

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Jessica Boghosian (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) scored 10 minutes into the first overtime period to lift the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 win over the University of New England Noreasters in a non-conference field hockey game Thursday evening at Hannaford Field.

With the win, Southern Maine improves its record to 4-3 overall and marks the first time since the 2008 season that the Huskies defeated the Noreasters.  The series record between the two schools now stands at 7-3-0 in favor of UNE.  With the loss, UNE's two-game win streak comes to an end dropping its overall record to 4-2.

Earning the second game-winning goal of her career, Boghosian started the play inserting the ball on
the Huskies' second penalty corner of the overtime period.  After cutting to the inside of the circle, Boghosian received the ball back from junior Leanne Reichert (Portland, Maine), took a touch and then drove the ball to the far side of the cage for the win.

Despite being outshot 6-1 in the opening stanza, Southern Maine led the Noreasters 1-0 at the half. Sophomore Tayla Smedberg (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) gave her team the lead in the 30th minute redirecting a pass from junior Michaela Demers (Manchester, N.H.) for her third goal of the season.

UNE continued to dominate with shots on goal and pulled even with the Huskies in the 44th minute.  Sophomore Olivia Madore (Arundel, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) sent in a driven ball from outside the circle and classmate Vonde Saunders (Conway, N.H./Kennett) was able to put her stick on it, redirecting it to the left side.  The score remained even at 1-1 through regulation.

In the overtime period, each team had a solid chances on penalty corners before Boghosian converted on USM's second of the period and just the third of the game for the game-winner.  Junior goalkeeper Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) made six saves in the win as UNE finished the game with an 11-3 advantage in shots and a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.  UNE junior Holly Smith (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veterans Memorial) did not make a save in the loss.

Southern Maine travels to Eastern Connecticut State for a Little East Conference game on Saturday (2:00 p.m.).  UNE hosts Western New England on Saturday (5:00 p.m.) in a CCC game.
