HAVERHILL, Massachusetts -- Veterans Peabo Knoth and Luis Pereira supplied the goals and first-year Drew Parsons added an assist as the Bates men's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a 2-0 non-conference win over Newbury College on Tuesday night at Trinity Stadium.

The host Nighthawks (2-1) were outshot by the Bobcats (1-0) by a 14-8 margin in a much closer game than the last matchup between the squads, a 9-0 Bates win on Oct. 1, 2014 in Lewiston. Bates had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal and 2-1 in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Sam Polito (Far Hills, N.J.) made two saves in Bates' shutout victory.

Knoth (Portland, Maine), Bates' All-NESCAC forward, scored Bates' first goal of the season, and his
12th career tally, with an assist by Parsons (Farmington, Maine) in the 17th minute of the game. Parsons was one of three newcomers in Bates' starting lineup, along with sophomore David Murphy (Yarmouth, Maine) and first-year Drew Munoz (Dallas, Texas).

Pereira (Curitiba, Brazil), who came off the bench and tallied a team-high six shots, doubled the Bobcats' lead when he knocked in a penalty kick into the bottom left corner of the Newbury goal less than two minutes after halftime.

Bates will open New England Small College Athletic Conference play this Saturday at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.
