Saint Joseph's Shuts Down Anna Maria, 4-0

PAXTON, Mass.— The Saint Joseph's College men's soccer team remained flawless in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a 4-0 shutout over the AMCATS of Anna Maria College on Monday afternoon.

With the win, the Monks improve to 11-1-3 overall and 6-0-0 in GNAC play, while Anna Maria falls to 2-9-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league competition. Saint Joseph's extends a program-record undefeated streak to 13 games and has not allowed an opponent to score in the last 835 minutes of play (the JWU goal on October 1st was an own goal).

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Monks scored their first goal of the game in the 15th minute and had plenty of opportunities to add to it in the first half, but many of their set-plays were intercepted by AMCAT defenders in the first half. Saint Joseph's still managed to outshoot the AMCATS 13-4, but the score remained 1-0 entering halftime.

The story changed in the second half as the Monks netted three goals in quick succession at the 53rd, 57th, and 64th minutes. The Saint Joseph's defense was flawless in the second half as they did not allow a single AMCAT shot.

SCORING

Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) netted the game-winner in the 15th minute as he stuffed home a cross across the goal line from teammate Nicholas Borowski (Webster, Mass.).

In the second half, Mitchell Duncan (Sanford, Maine) gave a beautiful through-ball to Kartikeya Swarup (Delhi, India). Swarup drew out AMCAT goalkeeper Jonathan Alicea with a fake shot, dribbled past him, and beat an AMCAT defender to an unattended net for the tap-in goal.

Dalton Guamer (Corona, Calif.) netted a penalty kick in the 57th minute for the 3-0 lead before Swarup fed a cross from the right wing to the top of the 18-yard box, where Noah Robinson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was waiting to place a high shot into the net.

GOALKEEPERS

Alicea made 10 saves in net for Anna Maria in his second start of the season. Monks keeper Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) needed to make just one save in the complete-game shutout.

WHAT'S NEXT

Anna Maria is idle until Saturday when they travel to Suffolk for a 1:00 p.m. The Monks are also in action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Norwich.

Thomas Shuts Out Southern Maine 3-0

GORHAM, Maine –  Junior Tevin Reid (Dorchester, Mass./Bunker Hill) ran onto a well-played long ball from MacQuille Walker (Hamilton Parish, Bermuda/Berkeley Institute) in the sixth minute to score the game-winner as the Thomas College Terriers defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-0 in a non-conference men's soccer game Wednesday evening at Hannaford Field.

With the win, Thomas improves its overall record to 6-3-1.  The Terriers have won five out of their last six games.  Southern Maine falls to 1-8-3 with the loss.

Reid broke through for his fourth goal of the season with a well-time run onto a lofted ball from Walker. Walker sent the booming pass over the top of the Huskies' defense and Reid touched the ball once before beating USM sophomore goalkeeper Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) to the far post.

The Terriers remained in front of Southern Maine 1-0 before adding two more goals in the 31st and 34th minute.  Junior Kyle Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine) headed in his second goal of the season off of a cross from junior Jeffrey Nagy (Old Saybrook, Conn.) to double the Terrier advantage, and less than three minutes later sophomore Josh Emard (Lebanon, Maine/Noble) converted a penalty kick for the 3-0 final.

Husky sophomore Yousif Altewaijry (Al Koubar, Saudi Arabia/Al Husson School) had Southern Maine's best opportunity for a goal in the 78th minute, receiving a flat ball across the box after a strong individual effort from Charlie Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus).  Altewaijry was one-on-one with Thomas senior goalkeeper senior Joakim Stearnas (Stockholm, Sweden/Bromma Gymnasium), but Stearnas came off of his line to make a big save to keep the clean sheet.

Stearnas finished with three saves to earn the shut out and his third win of the season.  Hulbert made six saves in a strong effort. TC held a 19-11 advantage in shots and a 5-4 lead in corner kicks.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (4:00 p.m.) when it travels to Plymouth State for a Little East Conference game. Thomas College returns to North Atlantic Conference action on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) when it travels to Green Mountain College.

Husson Men's Soccer Takes Down Colby, 2-1

BANGOR, Maine - Rod Ghanayem broke a 1-1 deadlock with his second goal of the season in the 45th minute to lift Husson past Colby College in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Boucher Field.

Colby (1-3-1) jumped on the board early when Jeffrey Rosenberg took a cross from Cam Clouse and lofted the ball into the left corner of the net as the Mules lead 1-0 at the 10:32 mark.

The game remained in favor of the Mules at 1-0 into the 27th minute before Husson's (1-3-2) Josh Bellomo unleashed a powerful shot into the upper corner of the net in the 28th minute for the equalizer.

Bowdoin, Bates Play to Mid-Week Draw in Men's Soccer

Levi Morant scored with under 11 minutes remaining to give Bowdoin the lead against Bates on Tuesday
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin and Bates men's soccer teams exchanged goals in the final 11 minutes of regulation and ended in a 1-1 deadlock on Tuesday afternoon at Pickard Field.

The Polar Bears move to 3-1-1 (1-1-1 NESCAC) this season while the Bobcats stand at 2-2-2 (0-2-1 NESCAC) following today's match.

Match Highlights
  • The teams traded great chances in the opening half, including a fantastic opportunity for Bates with under 18 minutes to go in the period. Eric Opoku came loose on the left side of the box and curved a hard shot towards the right post that was swept aside by Bowdoin's Stevie Van Siclen
  • Bates' Robbie Montanaro returned the favor with 10:30 remaining in the half as a header by Bowdoin'sMoctar Niang seemed destined for the net, only to be punched out by the Bobcat netminder, sending the game scoreless into the half
  • Bowdoin looked to secure the win with 10:31 left in regulation after a lengthy possession saw Ethan Ellsworth rifle a low, hard shot towards Montanaro. The Bates netminder made the initial stop, but the ball bounced loose in front where Levi Morant hammered home the rebound to give the hosts a 1-0 lead
  • The Polar Bears were unable to secure the victory, though, as a backline miscommunication with under five minutes to go saw two Bowdoin defenders attempt to clear the ball unsuccessfully. The ball came to the foot of Nate Merchant, who punched home the game-tying tally with four minutes to go
  • Neither team could find the game winner in the extra session as Bowdoin took the only shot of either overtime that was handled by Montanaro
  • Bowdoin held a 13-11 edge in shots for the contest and 9-3 advantage in corner kicks
  • Montanaro stopped seven shots for Bates while Van Siclen made five saves for Bowdoin
  • Bowdoin remains undefeated against Bates in their last 18 meetings with the Bobcats, holding a 13-0-5 record during that span. Bates last defeated Bowdoin in 1999.

Bates Men's soccer plays Bowdoin to a 1-1 draw

Junior Nate Merchant scored his second goal of the year in Bates' 1-1 draw with Bowdoin on Sept. 20, 2016. (File photo by Phyllis Graber Jensen/Bates College)
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Junior forward Nate Merchant scored in the 85th minute and the Bates men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with Bowdoin Tuesday afternoon at Pickard Field.

It's the second straight year the Bobcats (2-2-2, 0-2-1 NESCAC) have played the Polar Bears (3-1-1, 1-1-1 NESCAC) to a draw, with the two teams finishing last year's match in Lewiston scoreless.

Tuesday's match was scoreless at halftime but not without a couple of good scoring opportunities for both sides.

Bowdoin recorded six shots in the first half while Bates tallied four. Sophomore goalkeeper Robbie Montanaro (Belmont, Mass.) made three of his seven saves in the first half, including smothering two header attempts in the box by the Polar Bears.

In the 27th minute, first-year Eric Opoku (Accra, Ghana) broke free and shot the ball towards the right post, only to see Bowdoin goalkeeper Stevie Van Siclen make a spectacular save, keeping the match scoreless.

Throughout the match, Bowdoin got corner kick opportunities but the Bates defense led by junior Max Watson (Yarmouth, Maine) repeatedly prevented them from taking advantage. None of the Polar Bears' nine corner kicks on the afternoon resulted in scores.

But Bowdoin did get on the board first in the second half.

In the 79th minute, Ethan Ellsworth fired a hard shot from about 25 yards out that Montanaro deflected away from the goal. But the deflection went right to Levi Morant who blasted the ball into the top of the net to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead.

In the 85th minute, Bates denied yet another Bowdoin corner opportunity and went on the counter attack. Senior forward Peabo Knoth (Portland, Maine) dribbed the ball into the box. A Bowdoin defender deflected it away from him but the ball went right to Merchant (Los Angeles, Calif.) who tallied his second goal of the season, tying him with Opoku for the team lead.

Merchant's goal also marks the first goal of the year for Bates in NESCAC play after previously being shutout by Hamilton and Tufts.

The match went to overtime and neither team recorded a shot in the first overtime period. The Polar Bears did threaten, tallying three of their nine corner kick opportunities on the afternoon in one two-minute stretch as time was winding down. But the first overtime period ended with the match still tied at one.

In the 109th minute of the match, in the second overtime period, Bowdoin's Austin Downing shot a ball hard on the ground that headed toward the goal. Montanaro went down to both knees and secured it for his seventh save of the afternoon, lying face down for a moment, breathing a sigh of relief.

The draw snaps a streak of seven straight wins in Brunswick for Bowdoin against the Bobcats.

Bates is back in action Saturday at 2:00 p.m. when they host Wesleyan at Russell Street Field.

Bowdoin Men's Soccer Looks To Defend NESCAC Championship This Weekend

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's soccer team will look to defend its league crown at the 2015 NESCAC Men's Soccer Championship this weekend hosted by Middlebury College.

Semifinal contests get underway when the host Panthers and eighth-seeded Wesleyan take the field on Saturday at 11 a.m. The second semifinal game features fourth-seeded Connecticut College versus sixth-seeded Bowdoin at 1:30 p.m. Advancing teams will meet for the NESCAC trophy on Sunday at noon with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
Defending conference champion Bowdoin is making its third straight semifinal appearance after defeating Tufts, 1-0, last Saturday. Senior Nabil Odulate (Ellicott City, Md.) provided the only goal of the game when he received a pass from junior Patrick Kearon (Royersford, Pa.) in the 25th minute, as the Polar Bears went on to notch their first NESCAC postseason win over the Jumbos in three opportunities. Bowdoin boasts the second-best scoring defense in the league, allowing only seven goals this season. Sophomore Stevie Van Siclen (Carlisle, Mass.) has played nearly every minute between the posts for the Polar Bears, registering a 0.43 goals against average and a .877 save percentage. Bowdoin has been no stranger to tight contests, as it has played in six double-overtime games. Four of those games ended in scoreless draws. Seniors Andrew Jones (Scarborough, Maine) and Connor Keefe (San Diego, Calif.) lead the squad with four goals each, as the Polar Bears have received goals from 12 other players.

The Camels earned their first postseason win at home in a dramatic 3-3, double-overtime draw versus fifth-seeded Williams after advancing on penalty kicks. Sophomore Graham Koval (Crested Butte, Colo.) netted the equalizer with six seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. Following a pair of scoreless frames, the advancing team was determined on penalty kicks, as Connecticut College came out on top, 4-2, after junior Pat Devlin (Washington Crossing, Pa.) scored the difference-maker. A pair of first-year players have energized the Camel offense as Mark Leon (Wrentham, Mass.) and Chris Lockwood (Glastonbury, Conn.) account for more than 43 percent of the teams' points. Leon has registered six goals and two assists for 14 points, while Lockwood has tallied five goals and three assists for 13 points. Junior Austin DaCunha (Brookfield, Conn.) has allowed 17 goals in 15 games for a 1.10 goals against average to go along with a .721 save percentage, as Connecticut College is making back-to-back semifinal appearances for the first time in program history.
