Humes, Amdur lead impressive opening-day win for women's soccer

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Leah Humes scored two goals and freshman Olivia Amdur had two assist to lead the Bates College Bobcats to a 3-0 season-opening win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday evening at Hannaford Field.

Bates outshot USM by a 31-4 margin. With the win, the Bobcats begin their 2015 campaign with a 1-0 record. Southern Maine drops to 1-1 with the loss.

Despite holding a significant advantage in shots on goal in the first half, Bates did not break through for a score until the 40th minute to take a 1-0 advantage at the break. Southern Maine goalkeeper Marissa Temple kept her team in the game, making 13 first-half saves.

Bates scored two of its three goals off of corner kicks, including the first goal of the game.
Sophomore Hannah Behringer (Old Lyme, Conn.) was able to beat Temple inside the far post, redirecting a corner kick from Amdur (Chicago, Ill.) for her first collegiate goal.

Southern Maine had a pair of chances in the first half, as CC Pelletier and Analies Ross-Dyjak each had quality attempts. Bates' starting goalkeeper sophomore Sarah McCarthy (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) kept the Huskies off of the scoreboard, making both of Bates' saves.

Bates struck early in the second half as Humes (Beaconsfield, Quebec) scored the first of her two goals just four minutes into the frame. Amdur registered her second assist of the game, carrying the ball down the left side of the field before serving a well-placed ball to Humes' head on the far post in the 49th minute.

The score remained unchanged at 2-0 for the next 20 minutes before Humes made it 3-0 off of one of the Bobcats' 14 corner kicks in the game. This time Humes benefitted from a back-heeled flick from first-year Cassidy McCarns (Branford, Conn.), who had entered the game minutes beforehand, for an insurance goal in the 68th minute for the final score.

Temple finished the game making a career-high 19 saves, as the Bobcats put 22 shots on goal.

McCarthy played the first 45 minutes for Bates, making two saves. Sophomore Allegra Sacco (Medway, Mass.) made one save in 34:43 of playing time, followed by first-year Talia Regenstein (San Francisco, Calif.), who did not register a save in the final 10:07.

Bates travels to Hamilton in Clinton, N.Y., on Saturday (11am) for its first New England Small College Athletic Conference game of the season.
