and Vermont, is proud to announce that attorney Valerie Wicks has joined the firm as the Attorney Director of Case Intake, Evaluation & Core Cases Unit.

In her new role, Wicks will oversee the firm’s case intake and evaluation process, assess potential cases, guide early investigation and case development, and work with clients through the critical early stages of their claims.

Wicks brings years of experience in litigation, negotiation, and client advising to the position. She began her legal career at a large law firm in New York before moving to Maine to serve as a law clerk to United States District Court Judge Nancy Torresen. She later built a litigation practice focused on employment and civil rights matters, handling cases ranging from wage-and-hour class actions to individual discrimination claims.

Among Wicks’ notable legal accomplishments, she served as lead attorney in the first-ever decision interpreting Maine’s Equal Pay Law. She secured a victory for her client in federal district court and successfully defended that decision before the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. The landmark ruling established that discriminatory intent is not required to bring a claim under Maine’s Equal Pay Law and allowed her client to secure treble damages.

Wicks earned her undergraduate degree from Bates College and her Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School. She currently serves on the United States District Court for the District of Maine’s Local Rules Committee and has volunteered with the Southern Maine Workers’ Center Legal Clinic. She has also been recognized by Super Lawyers, after previously being named a Super Lawyers Rising Star.

Prior to attending law school, Wicks taught first and second grade in the New York City public school system.
