WENHAM, Massachusetts — Sophomore Emily Allcroft (Haydenville, Mass.) scored twice for Gordon in the second half after a defensive stalemate in the first half but the Fighting Scots were able to hold off a late rally from Husson to win 2-1 in a second hallf that saw a back-and-forth game.
Gordon (1-1) had its fair share of opportunities in the first half by forcing Husson goalkeeper Kaitlin Dolloff (Richmond, R.I.) into six saves. Husson (0-2) showed its offensive as well with six penalty corners earned in the first half alone—five more than the Scots. However, Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) was able to make a few one-on-one stops to keep the teams scoreless at the break.
Allcroft finally broke the scoreless stretch in the 47th minute on a chip from five yards out. The forward was able to get enough of a ball in a scrum to put it over the outstretched glove of Dolloff and into the top right corner.
Just six minutes later, Allcroft had another opportunity but with fewer defenders to beat. A foul on the goal line gave Gordon a penalty stroke and Allcroft was able to go high again for the 2-0 lead.
The Eagles answered back in the 58th minute when Mikayla Toth (Skowhegan, Maine) was able to push a loose ball under Hicks.
Both teams put up 17 shots on the evening, but Gordon edged Husson in shots on target, 12-8. The Eagles pressured the Scots with 14 penalty corners, but did not convert one.
Dolloff made 10 saves for the Eagles, while Hicks stopped six shots.
Tough games await both squads as Husson takes on #10 Wellesley tomorrow afternoon, while Gordon travels to MIT on Tuesday.
