Bates College Downs Southern Maine 3-0

Marissa Temple set a career-high with 19 saves.

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Leah Humes (Beaconsfield, Quebec/Phillips Andover) scored two goals and freshman Olivia Amdur (Chicago, Ill./Francis. W. Parker) had two assist to lead the Bates College Bobcats to a 3-0 season-opening win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday evening at Hannaford Field. 

 

With the win, the Bobcats begin their 2015 campaign with a 1-0 record.  Southern Maine drops to 1-1 with the loss.

Despite holding a significant advantage in shots on goal in the first half, Bates did not break through
for a score until the 40th minute to take a 1-0 advantage at the break as Southern Maine senior goalkeeper Marissa Temple (Grafton, Mass.) kept her team in the game making 13 first half saves. Bates scored two of its three goals off of corner kicks including the first goal of the game as sophomore Hannah Behringer (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) was able to beat Temple far post redirecting a corner kick from Amdur.

Southern Maine had a pair of chances in the first half as senior CC Pelletier (West Newfield, Maine/Massabesic) and junior Analies Ross-Dyjak (Orono, Maine) each had quality attempts.  Bates' starting goalkeeper sophomore Sarah McCarthy (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) kept the Huskies off of the scoreboard making both saves.

Bates struck early in the second half as Humes scored the first of her two goals just four minutes into the frame.  Amdur registered her second assist of the game carrying the ball down the left side of the field before serving a well-placed ball to Humes' head on the far post in the 49th minute.  The score remained unchanged at 2-0 for the next 20 minutes before Humes made it 3-0 off of one of the Bobcats' 14 corner kicks in the game.  This time Humes benefitted from a back-healed flick on from freshman Cassidy McCarns (Branford, Conn.) for an insurance goal in the 68th minute for the final score.

Temple finished the game making a career-high 19 saves as the Bobcats put 22 shots on goal.  McCarthy played the first 45 minutes for Bates, making two saves.  Sophomore Allegra Sacco (Medway, Mass./Holliston) made one save in 34:43 of playing time, while freshman Talia Regenstein (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) did not register a save in the final 10:07.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a non-conference game at Thomas College.  Bates travels to Hamilton College on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) for its next contest. .
