Land Trust Annual Celebration Features Mushroom Expert

Union, Maine - Georges River Land Trust invites its members and the public to its Annual Celebration on Tuesday, September 15, at the Dennis Easement property in Union. The Dennis Easement is on the edge of the Union farmbelt, an area identified by the Land Trust as a high conservation value focus area. The event host, Christie Dennis, has owned the 214-acre farm for nearly 50 years. It is a mixture of meadows with great views of Sennebec Pond and woodlands that rise up to Appleton Ridge.

At 3 p.m. a short guided walk of the property is offered before convening at 3:30 p.m. for a short business meeting followed by a presentation by our featured speaker, Greg Marley. Greg is a devoted Maine mycologist and loves teaching interested people about the variety of mushroom species right in our backyards. He will give a talk entitled Wild Mushrooms: An Indispensable Friend of Every Forest. After every significant rainfall of the summer and fall, lawns, fields and forests erupt in a wild array of mushrooms of almost every color and shape. We see just the visible tip of the iceberg of growth of underground mycelium that fuels the health of the forest. Among the wild mushrooms are preeminent edibles and those that are deadly poisonous, and many that are neither. Greg will give attendees insight into the fascinating world of fungi!

This event is free and open to the public. Happy hour snacks and beverages will be provided by the Land Trust. Bring a chair if you are able. Call the Land Trust for directions: 594-5166.
