Southern Maine Pins Setback on Bowdoin Baseball in 7-2 Final

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine baseball team road a five-run second inning to a 7-2 final over Bowdoin on Wednesday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (9-6) matched the Huskies (8-5) with five hits in the game, but surrendered five stolen bases to USM in the loss.

Game Highlights
  • Back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the first resulted in the Huskies' first run. After both runners advanced with stolen bases, a sacrifice fly by Sam Stauble gave USM a 1-0 lead.
  • Southern Maine loaded the bases with the first three batters of the second, but Bowdoin responded by recording two quick outs. Sam Dexter followed with a two-run single to center before the Polar Bears could escape the inning.
  • USM scored another quick run off a wild pitch to go ahead 4-0.  Stable tallied his second RBI of the game with a single through the left side to conclude the inning's scoring.
  • Bowdoin's defense settled through the remainder of the game, allowing only one more run. The Polar Bears broke through offensively in the fourth as Jack Wilhoite doubled to right center to drive in Bjorn Hansen.
  • Colby Joncas added at two-out RBI single through the right side in the top of the fifth, making the score 6-2. Sean Mullaney and Luke Cappellano started the inning with consecutive singles.
  • USM responded in the bottom half of the inning as Matt Bender drove in a run.
By the Numbers
  • USM tallied five stolen bases, including two by Sam Dexter. Joncas and Hansen each had a stolen base for Bowdoin.
  • The Huskies committed three errors, resulted in one unearned run.
  • Mullaney went 2-for-4 on the Bowdoin side while Dexter lead the way for USM by going 2-for-3.
  • The Bowdoin pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts and four walks. USM combined for 16 strikeouts.
