UMaine Baseball Splits Non-Conference Weekday Doubleheader Against Rhode Island

ORONO, Maine -- Maine (12-27) Baseball split Tuesday's doubleheader against Rhode Island (17-20) at Mahaney Diamond. Game one went into extra innings and the Rams were able to pull out the victory 6-4. In game two, the Black Bears held the Rams scoreless and won 1-0.

Game featured Jonah Normandeau for the Black Bears and Blaise Whitman on the mound for the Rams.

Jordan Powell led all Rams hitters going three for four with one RBI.

The Black Bears scored the first run of the game as Tyler Schwanz doubled scoring Colin Ridley as Maine took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Maine added another run as Caleb Kerbs reached on a fielder's choice as Schwanz scored, increasing Maine's lead, 2-0.

Rhode Island answered, exploding for four runs in the top of the third. Jordan Powell singled to right
center driving in one, cutting the Maine lead, 2-1. Ryan Olmo singled through the right side and tying the game, 2-2. Connor Foreman later singled to center field driving in two more and taking a 4-2 lead.

Kevin Stypulkowski doubled to right center scoring Danny Casals trimming the URI lead, 4-3. Colin Ridley later singled through the right side tying the game once again, 4-4.
 
Jonah Normandeau kept Rhode Island scoreless for the next three innings, finishing the day with six innings of work, allowing four runs and striking out seven.

Maine and Rhode Island were held scoreless as they headed into the tenth inning, the Rams broke the scoreless streak. Laurence Hill singled to center driving in one and URI took a 5-4 lead. Chris Hess later singled driving in another run and increasing the Rams lead, 6-4.

Tyler Barss came in for the save opportunity and shut the Black Bears down to earn his sixth save of the year.

Game two featured Eddie Emerson for Maine and Evan Flanagan for Rhode Island on the hill.

Emerson pitched four scoreless innings of work, allowing two hits and striking out five.

Tyler Schwanz singled through the righ side scoring Colin Ridley and taking a 1-0 lead.

Nick Silva entered in the top of the fifth and kept the Rams scoreless as he earned the win, his third of the season. Silva finished the day allowing only two hits and striking out two as well.

Maine hosts America East opponent UMass Lowell for a three game series this weekend at Mahaney Diamond. Game one of the series begins at 1:00 p.m. Kids receive free admission and adult tickets are $6.
