The Spartans came out on top 7-4 in game one thanks to a six-run third inning, while Charles Stapleford didn't allow a hit after the first inning in game two to lead the Spartans to a 3-1 win. Castleton is now 22-9 overall and 14-2 in NAC play, while Husson falls to 15-16 on the season with a 10-6 mark in the NAC.
Game One
The Spartans got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first. Taylor Vile hit a one-out single
and Nick Swim followed with a single of his own. Vile then advanced to third on a flyout by Errico, and came home on a single by Bahan for the 1-0 advantage.
Husson responded in the top of the second inning as each of the first two runners reached, one on an error and the other on a catcher's interference. Sam Huston laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, and Christian Corneil followed with an RBI groundout. Sam Spencer ended the scoring and got out of the inning with a swinging strikeout.
In the bottom of the third, Castleton exploded for six runs to grab a 7-1 lead. Deagan Polan led off with a single and two batters later, Swim followed with an RBI double to left field. Errico singled home Swim and Buckley followed with an RBI single of his own to make it 4-1. Bahan then scored on a wild pitch four the 5-1 lead. Caron and Dillon Benham both had RBI singles before Brandon Reilly got out of the inning.
Reilly did keep the Spartans off the board over the next three innings, while Spencer limited the Eagles to just two hits through six innings.
In the seventh, Spencer ran into some trouble as he loaded the bases with no outs for Corneil. He singled up the middle to cut the deficit to 7-2. Alex Chapman followed with an RBI groundout for the first out and Wong made it 7-4 with another groundout. However, Husson didn't get anymore runs as a flyout ended the contest.
Reilly took the loss as he went six innings for a complete game, giving up seven earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts.
Game Two
Husson jumped out to an early lead, pushing across a run in the top half of the first inning. Andrew Curran walked to lead off the game before stealing second base and advancing to third on a groundout by JT Whitten. Julien Boone then sent a single in the left field to score Curran and put the Eagles up 1-0 with Castleton coming to bat.
The lead didn't last long, as Vile knocked a base hit through the left side before moving to second on a wild pitch. A groundout by Swim moved Vile to third base, before Errico lined a single into left field to draw the game even at 1-1.
Neither team would crack the score column again until the fifth inning, when Vile and Swim reached base before scoring on a hard base hit to left field by Zach Bahan to push the Spartans' lead to 3-1.
Stapleford cruised the rest of the way, inducing a double play to end the sixth inning and striking out a pair of hitters in the seventh before a groundout sealed the victory for Castleton.
Dan Whitney went the distance for Husson, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and three walks while striking out three batters.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow, as they face off in a doubleheader beginning at noon at Spartan Field.
