Bates (10-3, 6-3 NESCAC) reaches the 10-win mark for the second straight year and only the second time since 1987. The Bobcats also moved into sole possession of fifth place in the conference standings, with one game remaining in the regular season. Bates will play at Colby on Wednesday at 4pm.
The visiting Camels (7-7, 3-6 NESCAC) lost for the third time in four games and remain in eighth
place in the NESCAC; they will finish the regular season at Wesleyan on Wednesday at 4:30.
Four days after he scored six goals including the game-winner in Bates' double-overtime, 19-18 win over No. 3 Tufts, junior Charlie Fay (Falmouth, Maine) scored a game-high four goals for the Bobcats. Junior Kyle Weber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) added three goals.
Junior Andrew Melvin (Medfield, Mass.) had one goal with three assists, sophomore Clarke Jones (Pepper Pike, Ohio) added a goal and two assists, senior Jack Allard (Ridgewood, N.J.) had a goal with one assist and junior Jake Walsh (Baltimore, Md.) had two assists for the Bobcats. Freshman Mitchell Drake (Annapolis, Md.) earned the win in goal, making nine saves and allowing seven goals over 56 minutes.
Derek Bertolini and Ross Thompson paced the Camel offense with two goals and two assists apiece. Jordan Foster pitched in with two goals and PJ Kelleher added two assists. Ben Parens won 11 of 20 faceoffs and scooped a game-high seven ground balls, while Bobby Bleistein made eight saves.
Capitalizing on a Bates turnover, Pierce DellaFera scored the first goal of the game for CC on a Tompkins assist three minutes in. Melvin came back a minute later for Bates with an unassisted tally, and Bates took the lead for good with 8:34 left in period, as Allard scored his 37th goal of the season. With 2:29 to go, Bates made it 3-1 as Jones fed sophomore Burke Smith (Wilton, Conn.) at the top of the circle for a goal in transition.
Taking advantage of two Bates penalties, CC closed the gap to 3-2 34 seconds into the second quarter as Bertolini assisted Thompson on the game's first extra-man goal. But Weber scored unassisted on the run to make it 4-2 at halftime.
Fay and Weber scored at the 12:45 and 9:31 marks of the third quarter to assume a 6-2 advantage, but the Camels muscled back into the game with three unanswered goals. Thompson closed it to 6-3 on a Kelleher assist, then he assisted Bertolini 38 seconds later. With 6:07 to go, following a 90-second penalty called on the Bobcats, Bertolini assisted a man-up goal by Foster to make it a one-goal game again at 6-5.
But Bates answered with back-to-back goals before the end of the third, with Jones assisting Weber at 3:37 and Fay tapping in a short pass from Melvin over the back of the Conn goal.
Fay struck again with 13:38 to go in the fourth quarter with the game's most creative goal, taking an Allard pass and scoring on a backwards underhand flip for a 9-5 lead. Both sides scored twice again before the end of the game, with the Camels unable to narrow the gap to less than three.
