Huge game from Bohunsky helps UNE edge Gordon, 9-7

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Korinne Bohunsky (FY/Eliot, Maine) tallied four goals as the University of New England defeated Gordon College, 9-7, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference women's lacrosse match played Wednesday night (April 6) at the Big Blue Turf.

UNE (6-4, 2-1 CCC) won for the fourth time in five starts, while the Fighting Scots (3-6, 2-1) saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

Bohunsky had a monster game for the winners, adding five ground balls, five draw controls and a
pair of caused turnovers to her team-high total of four goals.

Jocelyn Davee (JR/Freeport, Maine) and Katie Cawley (SR/Cumberland, Maine) each contributed a pair of goals for UNE, while Nicole Carvalho (FY/South Kingstown, R.I.) rounded out the Nor'easters' scoring. Kimberly Gosselin (JR/Concord, N.H.) led all players with two assists.

Gordon's Jessica Castelline (SR/Concord, Mass.) scored four times to match Bohunsky with game-high honors in that category. Olivia McCarrick (FY/Millersville, Md.) notched a pair of markers and Bailey Grinnell (SR/South Hamilton, Mass.) added one.

The Nor'easters jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Gordon chipped away and drew within one (4-3) prior to halftime. Castelline had all three goals to halt UNE's momentum.

Bohunsky and Davee sandwiched goals around a tally by McCarrick to give the Nor'easters a 6-4 advantage early in the second half. Gordon would draw even (6-6) with 12:32 remaning after back-to-back goals by Grinnell and Castelline, but UNE grabbed the lead for good when Bohunsky notched an unassisted goal 2:07 later.

Cawley and Davee added insurance goals to build the Nor'easters' lead to three (9-6) before McCarrick completed the scoring with 1:38 remaining.

Goalkeeper Courtney Kendall (SR/Waltham, Mass.) had six saves for UNE, including a pair of crucial stops in the final 1:10 to help seal the victory. Her counterpart, Jackie Kiernan (JR/Lexington, Mass.) finished with five saves for Gordon.

In addition to her four goals, Castelline contributed five ground balls and three draw controls in a losing effort.

UNE will play another CCC game Saturday, heading to Rhode Island to face Salve Regina University at noon. Gordon hosts Eastern Connecticut State University that same day (12 p.m.).
