Bowdoin Softball Rebounds From Game One Setback to Force Wednesday Split

Emily Griffin allowed only three hits and one run while compiling six strikeouts
BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Bowdoin softball team never allowed the University of New England a multi-run inning en route to a doubleheader split on Wednesday evening.

The Nor'Easters (25-13) captured a tight 4-3 victory in game one before Bowdoin (19-14-2) took the nightcap in a 6-1 final.

Game One Highlights
  • UNE jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first following a bases loaded error. Bowdoin escaped the inning without incurring any further damage by turning a double play on the following batter.
  • The Polar Bears took the lead in the top of the third following back-to-back RBI doubles to right by Caroline Rice and Julia Geaumont.
  • The Nor'Easters evened the score in the bottom half of the inning off a double of their own. Amanda Vallante doubled down the leftfield line to drive in Avery Alberghini.
  • Anna Sessa gave UNE its second lead of the game with a sacrifice bunt that drove in Alberghini in the fifth.
  • Lauren O'Shea tagged an RBI single through the left side that drove in Geaumont to even the game at 3-3.
  • With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Sessa hit a walk-off single up the middle to end the game.
  • Geaumont was in the circle for Bowdoin and allowed six hits while tallying a strikeout and walk.
  • Katelyn Austin started for UNE and went five innings, allowing two runs off seven hits, before Sophia Burnham came in to conclude the game.
Game Two Highlights
  • The Polar Bears pushed three runs across the plate in the top of the first, beginning with an RBI double to right center by Geaumont. Katie Gately singled to right and O'Shea grounded out to the pitcher to drive in two more runs.
  • Vallante had her team's only RBI of game two off a double to right center that scored Alberghini in the fourth.
  • Geaumont put the ball in play in the top of the fifth, allowing Ali Miller to score on a UNE error.
  • Miller tripled in the following inning to drive in Jordan Gowdy and give Bowdoin a 5-1 lead.
  • Caroline Rice scored the final Polar Bear run off a wild pitch in the seventh.
  • Emily Griffin earned the win for Bowdoin with six innings of work, allowing three hits and one run. The junior tallied six strikeouts and a walk. Samantha Roy pitched one inning and collected two Ks.
  • Geaumont went 3-for-4 with two doubles and as many RBIs.
