Colby Women’s lacrosse wins seventh in a row

Georgia Lubrano had seven ground balls and two caused turnovers Wednesday.
WATERVILLE, Maine — Four Colby College players had two goals and the Mules’ Georgia Lubrano had a game-high seven ground balls in a 12-4 non-conference win over Keene State at Bill Alfond Field on Wednesday. 

Colby, the eighth-ranked team in Division III, extends its win streak to seven games and moves to 8-1 overall. The Mules will have a showdown with seventh-ranked Amherst College on Saturday at noon on Bill Alfond Field.
 
Keene State (4-6 overall) played well and only trailed 3-2 after 20 minutes of play. The Mules scored three of the final four goals of the opening half to take a 6-3 margin.
 
The Mules looked relaxed in the second half and pulled away with four straight goals to go up 10-3.
 
Colby’s Emilie Klein had a big all-around game with one goal, two assists, two draw controls, three caused turnovers, and one ground ball. Kendall Smith and Abby Hooper both had two goals and one assist, while Sasha Fritts and Claire Caputi each had two goals. The Mules also received goals from Maddie Hatch, Gemma Bready, and Chrissy Coveney.
 
Kaitlin Nolan led the Owls with two goals, two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and two draw controls. Jenna Bellano also had two goals and finished with two draw controls.
 
Lubrano had two caused turnovers to go with her seven ground balls. Emma Marjollet had a game-high four caused turnovers and had two ground balls. Jackie Brokaw caused two turnovers and scooped three ground balls.
 
Tori Weinstock paced Keene State with four ground balls, three caused turnovers, and one draw control. Amanda Makar added two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
 
Izzy Scribano made five saves and had three ground balls for Colby. Owl goaltender Alison Argiro stopped 10 shots and had two ground balls.
 
The Mules were 4-for-6 on free-position opportunities. Coveney, Smith, Hooper, and Caputi had the goals.
 
On a cold Wednesday, the two teams combined for 54 turnovers. The Mules had a 27-14 edge in shots, holding the Owls to just four in the second half.
 
Smith’s goal with 25 seconds left in the first half put Colby up 6-3 at the break. Fritts scored from Klein with 22:39 remaining in the game, Hooper scored on a free position about a minute later, and Hooper tallied again with 20:07 to go for a 9-3 margin.
