Nor'easters pull away in second half for 11-2 win

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England out-scored Gordon College 7-0 after halftime to pull away for an 11-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory Wednesday afternoon (April 6) in men's lacrosse action at the Big Blue Turf.

UNE won for the fifth time in its last six outings to improve to 7-5 overall, 2-1 in CCC play. The Fighting Scots drop to 1-9 on the season (1-2 CCC).

Big Blue was led by Dan Auger, who registered five points on three goals and two assists. Philip Young also had a strong outing, contributing a career-high three goals and one assist. Andrew Curro notched two goals, and Tom Luttrell aided the attack with one goal and one assist.

David Pearson saved all 12 shots he faced in the second half to backstop the win. John Dusel made
five stops in the opening 30 minutes for the Nor'easters, and J.T. Oliver collected a game-high five ground balls.

After the Scots took a 2-1 lead with 10:50 remaining in the 2nd period, Curro sandwiched Luttrell's marker with his pair to give UNE a 4-2 lead at the half, while the Nor'easters held a 31-13 advantage in shots.

Just over two minutes into the 3rd period, Young finished off a pass from Oliver to push the lead to three. Young converted two more attempts over the next 9:43 to register the hat trick.

The 4th period was much of the same, as Auger (2), Mitch Mullin, and Chris Harlow tossed in goals for the home team.

For Gordon, Roger Evans tallied one goal and assisted on the other, following-up his personal-best eight-goal performance the last time out. Nico Manganiello had the other score, and goalkeeper Cody Greenwald made 14 saves.

Each of the previous five meetings between the teams had been decided by one goal, including four that finished in overtime. The Fighting Scots had topped the Nor'easters in the last two, 11-10 (OT) and 17-16 (OT).

UNE will travel to Salve Regina University to continue its CCC slate on Saturday (3 p.m.). Gordon returns home to face Roger Williams University on Tuesday.
