The eighth-ranked Mules had their seven-game win streak snapped in
dropping to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Amherst, ranked
seventh in the country, improves to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Amherst’s defense allowed just three Colby shots in the second half
and nine for the game. Colby’s defense also was solid, allowing just 15
shots in the game. The two teams combined for 34 turnovers, but 19 of
the turnovers were caused.
Emilie Klein had two goals and Lexie Perticone dished three assists
for the Mules. Abby Hooper and Kendall Smith also scored for the Mules.
Mia Haughton had two goals and two assists for the Purple &
White. Rachel Passarelli added one goal and two assists, while Julia
Crerend and Claire Cagnassola both had two goals. Kate Wyeth had the
other score.
Colby never trailed in the first half. Klein tallied from Perticone
just 3:28 into the game. Amherst tied the game with 21:49 remaining on a
goal by Crerend from Haughton. Hooper put the Mules up 2-1 on another
assist from Perticone, but the Purple & White tied it again when
Wyeth scored from Passarelli.
The Mules seemed to have all the momentum in the game with two
goals in the final 6:05 of the half. Perticone had her third straight
assist on a goal by Smith with 6:05 to play. Klein got her second goal
with just 1:10 remaining to the break off a pass from Bridget Horwood.
Colby had a number of opportunities to go up by three goals in the
opening nine minutes of the second half. Amherst’s defense cracked down
hard and the offense got going when Crerend scored her second goal off a
dish from Passarelli with 20:22 remaining. Passarelli tied the game at
4-4 when she converted a free-position shot just 1:17 later.
Neither team could manage a goal over the next eight minutes, but
Amherst scored four times in the final 10:15 to pull away. Cagnassola
got the game-winning goal from Haughton, who then scored 2:05 later from
Hanna Krueger.
With Colby pushing to create turnovers, Amherst scored the lone
unassisted goals of the game. Haughton tallied with 1:21 remaining and
Cagnassola got her second goal with eight seconds left.
Christy Forrest made one save, had three ground balls, and caused
two turnovers for Amherst. Izzy Scribano had four saves and two ground
balls for the Mules.
Passarreli had three caused turnovers, while Krueger had two caused
turnovers and two draw controls. Rowena Schenck and Cagnassola each had
three ground balls.
Georgia Lubrano had four caused turnovers and one draw control for
Colby. Jackie Brokaw added three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Maddie Hatch had a game-high four draw controls.
