Bowdoin Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader at Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Bowdoin baseball team avoided a series sweep by capturing a 5-1 win over Trinity in game two of Saturday's NESCAC doubleheader.

Trinity (7-10, 2-1 NESCAC) shutout the Polar Bears (9-5, 1-2 NESCAC) 4-0 in game one of the rain delayed Saturday series.

Game One Highlights
  • Trinity struck first in the bottom of the third via an RBI single by Mackenze Genauer that drove in Ben Reinisch.
  • Johnny Stamatis drove Genauer in with a double of his own to put the Bantams up 2-0 before a single to right centerfield by Dan brought home Stamatis to make it a 3-0 game in favor of the Bantams at the end of three.
  • Trinity added its fourth run in the bottom of the fourth inning on Genauer's second RBI of the day that brought home Nick Pezzella.
  • Anthony Egeln went all seven innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three in the shutout.
  • Bowdoin starting pitcher Michael Staes gave up all four earned runs on nine hits.

Game Two Highlights
  • Bowdoin got on the board early scoring two runs in the top of the second. Luke Cappellano tagged an RBI single to drive in Brandon Lopez. Colby Joncas connected with a groundball to the pitcher that allowed Nick Sadler to score.
  • Trinity answered in the home half of the inning on a sac fly RBI from Daniel Pidgeon that drove the Bantams lone run of the game.
  • The Polar Bears secured the win with three runs in the seventh. Stephen Girolamo grounded out to the pitcher, but drove Cappellano in for the 3-1 lead. Peter Cimini and Chad Martin followed with a pair of two out RBI singles.
  • Ben Osterholtz got the start on the mound for Bowdoin and pitched 6.2 innings while allowing four hits and one run. Osterholtz, who improved to 3-0 on the season, had a pair of strikeouts and walks.
  • Lopez closed out the game with 2.1 innings of work. Lopez allowed no hits and struck out a pair of batters and walked one to shutout Trinity in the final innings.
Up Next
  • Trinity returns to action on Tuesday for a non-conference game against Gordon College.
  • Bowdoin plays at Southern Maine on Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. start.
