MSOC: Libbey scores two as Eagles tame Huskies, 3-1

BANGOR, Maine - Cam Libbey notched his first two goals in 2015 on Friday evening, leading Husson to a 3-1 win over Southern Maine in the second game of the fourth annual Adidas Challenge Cup at Boucher Field.
Stephen Berenyi, Josh Bean, Jimmy Fitzpatrick, and Miguel Caballero each chipped in with an assist for the Eagles, who are now unbeaten in 16 of the last 18 matchups with the Huskies. Goalkeeper Cody Cross (2-1) played the entire match and did not have to make a save.
"It was a good performance tonight, a good step forward for the guys," Eagles' coach Jeff Gettler said.
Husson (2-2) created numerous early scoring chances and broke through in the 15th minute when Mike Curtis(1) drilled a 10-yard shot that went top shelf over Huskies' netminder Simon Hulbert to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Libby then extended the advantage to 2-0 with a header in the 18th minute. The ball reached Libby off a throw-in by Bean that was redirected to him off a Berenyi header
The Huskies battled back when MK Mohamed scored in the 64th minute to cut the deficit in half, but the Eagles' defense stonewalled Southern Maine's offensive attack for the next 26 minutes to preserve the win.
Husson added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Libbey found the back of the net for the second time Friday with assists from Fitzpatrick and Caballero.
"Cam was very good," Gettler stated. "We played him in two spots – out wide to start the game and in the middle of the field in the second half – and I thought he did well at both places. Tonight Cam put in a really good shift for us. "
Libbey totaled a game-high eight shots on the night.
Hulbert made six saves for the Huskies in the net, but the Eagles outshot Southern Maine (1-3-1) 21-10.
"We have a chance to win our own tournament for the first time since it started four years ago," Gettler commented. "We are pretty excited to play tomorrow against a team we know very well in our conference who is very tough."
Husson will face Maine Maritime on Saturday,  Sept. 12, for a 7:30 p.m. scheduled kickoff on the final day of the tournament. Southern Maine will play Castleton (Vt.), which defeated the Mariners 2-0 in the first game Friday, at 5:00p.m. in the first game of the day.
