UMaine Softball Belts 14 Hits in 8-0 Win Over Saint Joseph's (ME)

Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine softball team notched 14 hits in a midweek, 8-0 non-conference victory over visiting Saint Joseph's (ME) in six-innings on Wednesday afternoon.

Sarah Coyne went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs while Chloe Douglass added a pair of hits, two RBIs and a run. In total, 11 Black Bears tallied at least one hit and six recorded an RBI.
Annie Kennedy picked up her fifth win of the season after tossing five innings of shutout ball, scattering four hits and striking out three. Nikki Misner pitched the final inning, giving up a one hit.

The Black Bears broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Meghan Royle began
the rally with a single to center, stole second, and later scored on Kristen Niland's single to right. On the play, the Monks' right fielder misplayed the ball, allowing Niland to reach third. Coyne drove in her first run of the day with a single through the right side before scoring on Rachel Carlson's sacrifice fly to left. Maine's lead reached four runs when Janelle Bouchard roped a double to deep center, scoring Chloe Douglass.

Maine kept the offense rolling into the fifth where it plated three more runs. With two outs, Coyne slapped a double to right, bringing in Maddie Decker. Douglass drove in two more runs when she floated a single into left. Coyne and Ashley Tinsman scored on the hit, putting Maine on top, 7-0.

The Black Bears put the game away with a run in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on second and third and nobody out, Decker blooped a soft shot into left. Alyssa Derrick came in to score on the play, giving Maine an eight-run lead, ending the game.

Maine returns to America East play when it travels to UAlbany for a key conference series. The Black Bears will take on the top team in the league beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m. Maine and UAlbany will close out its weekend series on Sunday with a single game slated for noon.
