Southern Maine Sweeps UMass Dartmouth 8-6 and 10-3

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Sophomore Sam Stauble (Harrison, Maine/Bridgton Academy) went 6 for 10 with three runs scored and four RBI as the University of Southern Maine opened its Little East Conference schedule by sweeping the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth by scores of 8-6 and 10-3 Saturday afternoon at Corsairs Field.

The sweep extended the Huskies winning streak to four games heading into tomorrow's (12:00 p.m.) make-up doubleheader at Rhode Island College.  The Huskies, the defending LEC champions, are now 11-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play.  The Corsairs have dropped their last three games, and five of the last six, to fall to 7-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference.  The Corsairs will host Plymouth State University in an LEC make-up doubleheader on Sunday (12:00 p.m.).

Stauble was 2 for 4 in the opener scoring two runs and driving home one.  In the nightcap,
Stauble went 4 for 6, including a double, with a run scored and three RBI.

Game One
The Huskies built an 8-1 lead, then held off the Corsairs to take the opener.  Senior right-hander Shyler Scates (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy) combined with two relievers to earn his fifth win of the season.  Scates went seven innings allowing eight hits and no walks while striking out six.  Freshman Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) retired the side in order in the ninth inning to earn his first career save.

Sophomore Brandon Martins (Manorville, N.Y.) paced USM's 11-hit attack with three singles and three RBI.  Junior Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine) also had a pair of safeties.

UMD sophomore Kenny Michael (Norwood, Mass.) was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle going 4 for 4 with three runs scored.  No other UMD player had more than one hit.  Junior right-hander Sean Callahan (Colchester, Vt.) was tagged with his first loss of the season allowing eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits and two walks while striking out four.

The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles from senior Nick DiBiase (Portland, Maine/Deering) and sophomore Kyle Heath (Westbrook, Maine).

After an RBI pinch-hit single by UMD senior Connor Shaw (Goffstown, N.H.) in the fifth cut the deficit in half, the Huskies responded with two runs in the sixth.  Martins drove in senior Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) with a single, and DiBiase brought Stauble in with a sacrifice squeeze bunt.

The teams traded four-run innings in the seventh to make it 8-5.  Three of USM's four runs were unearned.  Stauble and senior Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.) had RBI singles, and Martins had a two-run single.

UMD scored an unearned run on a passed ball in the eighth, but Jake Dexter shut the door in the ninth.

Game Two
Stauble played a big role in the Huskies getting off to a 4-0 start in the nightcap.  McDonough ignited a four-run uprising in the second inning with a two-run double.  After a Sam Dexter single, Stauble stroked a two-run double down the left-field line.

The Huskies upped their lead to 6-0 in the fifth on an RBI single from Glauser and an infield error.  UMD had a golden opportunity in the fifth against USM freshman starter Dalton Rice (Waterford, Maine/Oxford Hills) loading the bases with no outs.  The Corsairs got a run when Rice induced a double play after issuing three consecutive walks.  After another walk, Rice got out of further trouble with a strikeout to end the inning.

The teams traded two-run rallies in the sixth to make it 8-3.  Sam Dexter had an RBI double followed by an RBI single from Stauble.  With two outs, the Corsairs strung together four straight singles to produce two runs.

Rice earned his third win of the season going the first five innings.  He allowed one run on one hit and four walks while striking out eight.  The rookie hurler was very impressive setting down the first nine batters, and 12 of the first 13, before running into some wildness in the fifth.  Rice and three relievers combined to limit the Corsairs to six hits while striking out 13.

In addition to Stauble going 4 for 6, Sam Dexter, and rookie Kip Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) had two hits.

Senior southpaw Aaron Chouinard (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) went 5 1/3 innings allowing eight runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out five.
