GORHAM, Maine – Despite a challenging weather pattern that saw the
University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's tennis team change locations
three times, the Huskies prevailed and earned a 6-3 win over the
Western Connecticut State University Colonials in a Little East
Conference match.
Southern Maine started the match at Gorham High School,
but moved to the Portland Racket and Fitness Club and Falmouth Courts
over the next several points. While at Gorham High School, Southern
Maine grabbed a 2-0 lead after first and second doubles before dropping
the third doubles match for a 2-1 lead heading into the singles points.
Senior Eric Berry-Sandelin (South Portland, Maine) and sophomore Samuel Holland
(Falmouth, Maine) earned the first points of the match for the Huskies
taking a strong 8-1 decision at second doubles over Western Connecticut
sophomore Ben Cortez (Danbury, Conn.) and senior Romney Tiru (Waterbury,
Conn./Sacred Heart).
In singles action, USM swept the first through four spots. Junior Kyle Curley
(Gorham, Maine) dominated Colonial senior Jason Hipona (Orange,
Conn./Amity Regional) for a 6-0, 6-0 win at seconds singles, while
Berry-Sandelin's 6-2, 6-0 win at third singles was the match-clinching
fifth point over Cortez. Husky senior captain Tyler Adams
(Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) extended his singles match win-streak to 15
earning a win over Western's Marco Gobbato (Yonkers, N.Y.). Adams
bounced back from a 6-7 (3) loss in the first set, taking the final two
sets 6-2, 6-1.
USM returns to action on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.), hosting Colby College in a non-conference match.
