DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior Colleen Kane (Arlington,
Mass.) scored a pair of goals 12 seconds apart to spark a run of six
consecutive goals by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and the
Corsairs went on to defeat the visiting University of Southern Maine
Huskies 20-15 in a Little East Conference women's lacrosse match
Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Corsairs,
and improved their record to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in LEC play. The
Huskies fall to 1-6 overall, and 0-2 in the conference, with their sixth
straight loss since defeating Husson University in the season opener.
With the game tied 12-12, Kane converted a free-position
attempt at 18:46 to give the Corsairs the lead for good. The Corsairs
got possession off the ensuing draw and sophomore Leah Douty (Framingham, Mass.) fed Kane for her 41st goal of the season.
Douty pushed the lead to 16-12 with two goals 1:09
seconds apart, the second goal coming on
a free-position attempt,. Kane
was successful on yet another free-position try at 13:48, and Douty
added an unassisted marker at 12:40 to make it 18-12.
The Huskies cut the deficit in half getting three goals
in a span of 1:57 to close the gap to 18-15 with 7:50 to play. Junior Sam Campobasso (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored the first marker on a free-position try. Rookie Hannah LaSalle (Humarock, Mass./Marshfield) scored the next two, but those would be the last scores for the Huskies.
Sophomore Erin Kish (Littleton, Mass.)
snapped the string of USM goals at 4:50 with her 12th goal of the
season. Kane put the final marker on the board at 1:33.
Senior Sarah Pelligrinelli
(Southington, Conn.) led the Huskies scoring five goals and dishing out
one assist. Campobasso finished with four goals, and LaSalle added two
goals and two assists while earning seven draw controls. Senior goalie
Caley Presby (Portland, Maine/Deering) had 16 saves.
Kane led all scorers with eight points on seven goals and
one assist. Douty finished with five goals and one assist, and Kish
had four goals and one assist. Sophomore Julia DiPillo
(Medway, Mass.) had the other four Corsair goals. Douty also had a
game-high eight ground balls and five draw controls. Rookie goalie Kaitlyn Burchill (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) stopped 10 shots to earn her fifth win of the season.
UMD had a wide edge in shots (45-28) and a smaller
advantage in ground balls (32-27). The two teams combined to
successfully convert 15 of 25 free-position attempts in the game.
Southern Maine hosts the University of Maine at
Farmington on Monday (4:00 p.m.) for a non-conference match. UMass
Dartmouth will be at Framingham State University on Thursday (4:30
p.m.).
