Southern Maine Downs Bowdoin 7-2

GORHAM, Maine -- Seven University of Southern Maine pitchers combined to strike out 16 Bowdoin College batters as the Huskies defeated the Polar Bears 7-2 in their home opener at the USM Baseball Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

Playing in cold conditions, the two teams combined for just 10 hits (five per side) and 25 strikeouts.  USM took advantage of three hit batsmen, a walk, a wild pitch, an outfield error and two timely base hits to score five runs in the second inning to build an early 6-0 lead.

USM senior right-hander Shyler Scates (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy), the fifth Husky
hurler, was impressive in his two-inning stint striking out six consecutive Bowdoin hitters and picked up his fourth win of the season.  Freshman Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) struck out the side in the ninth to end the game.

Offensively, senior Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, a runs scored and two RBI for the Huskies.  Sophomore Sam Stauble (Harrison, Maine/Bridgton Academy) had an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to drive in a second run.

Bowdoin junior Sean Mullaney (Leominster, Mass./Lawrence Academy) had two hits and scored a run.  Rookie Colby Joncas (Londonderry, N.H.) had an RBI single, and first-year Jack Wilhoite (Winchester, Mass./Belmont Hill) had an RBI double.  Wilhoite started on the mound for the Polar Bears, who used eight pitchers, and took his second loss of the season.

The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as senior Nick DiBiase (Portland, Maine) and Sam Dexter walked to open the frame.  After a strikeout, the duo worked a double steal before Stauble lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored DiBiase.

Wilhoite struggled with his control in the second inning plunking sophomore Brandon Martins (Manorville, N.Y.) with a pitch and walking junior Matt Bender (Walpole, Mass.) to start the inning.  Sophomore reliever Max Vogel-Freedman (West Hartford, Conn./Conrad) came on and loaded the bases by nicking sophomore Kyle Heath (Westbrook, Maine) with a pitch.  Vogel-Freedman got two strikeouts to bring Sam Dexter to the plate, and Dexter lined a shot to center field to score Martins and Bender.  Heath moved to third on the hit and scored, with Sam Dexter moving up to second, as the ball was misplayed in the outfield for an error.

Junior Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine) was hit by a Vogel-Freedman pitch, and he and Sam Dexter successfully work a double steal.  Dexter scored on a wild pitch, and McDonough came home on Stauble's single through the left side.

Bowdoin got on the board with a single run in the fourth as Wilhoite drove in junior Bjorn Hansen (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) with his double to right-center field.  The Polar Bears got another single marker in the fifth on a two-out single from Joncas that drove in Mullaney who led off the inning with a single.

The Huskies matched the Polar Bear's run in the fifth as Martin hustled his way to a double and scored on Bender's RBI single.

Southern Maine (8-5) is scheduled to play tomorrow (3:30 p.m.) at Salem State University.  Bowdoin (9-6) begins a three-game series with Bates College on Friday (3:00 p.m.).  The first game of the series will be at Bowdoin.  The remaining two contests will be on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) at Bates.
