Betts with 3-Run Double in Double-A Debut
Portland, Maine- The
Sea Dogs (4-8) scored five runs in a sixth inning rally but the Trenton
Thunder (7-4) had the last laugh in a three-run ninth to beat the Sea
Dogs 7-5 on Monday night at Hadlock Field.
Making his Double-A debut, Jordan Betts (1-4, 2B, 3 RBI) delivered a bases clearing three-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Sea Dogs a 5-3 lead. Trenton led 3-0 at the start of the inning, but Rainel Rosario (2-4, R, RBI) singled and Aneury Tavarez (0-2, R, RBI, 2 BB) worked a bases loaded walk to cut the deficit to 3-2 before Betts' hit off of Trenton starter Brady Lail (ND, 5.1 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO).
The Sea Dogs couldn't hold on however, Trenton cut the deficit to 5-4 on a sac fly by Tyler Austin off of Mike McCarthy (ND, 2.2, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO). Rob Wort (L, 0-2) blew the save in the ninth when Jake Cave hit a bases-loaded, two-run single to put Trenton ahead 6-5. They added their seventh run when Tyler Wade scored from third base on a throwing error by Tzu-Wei Lin.
Justin Haley (5.0 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO) received no decision in his third start of the season for Portland. The Sea Dogs' bullpen has allowed 14 runs in the seventh inning or later over the past three games. Jonathan Holder (2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 SO) earned the win (1-1) in relief for Trenton, and Mark Montgomery (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) earned his first save of the season.
