Husson Falls to #18 Southern Maine 6-1

GORHAM, Maine - Husson University baseball team dropped a nine-inning non-conference game to #18-ranked University of Southern Maine, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium.

The victory extended the Huskies' winning streak to seven games, and improved their overall mark to 14-5.  The Eagles, now 11-10 overall, had their four-game winning streak snapped by the loss.

Senior Sam Dexter had a double and a home run to drive in three runs to become University of Southern Maine baseball program's career leader for hits. Junior Paul McDonough went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.  Sophomore right-hander Bobby Delaney (Merrick, N.Y.) had a quality start to earn his first win of the season.  Delaney hurled six innings allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out four.  Freshman Tanner Laberge and senior Ryan Browner combined for three prefect innings of relief.

Freshman Alex Chapman had the best success solving the deliveries of Delaney knocking out a pair
of singles and scoring the lone Husson run.  Senior Zach Sugar had the Eagles lone extra-base hit with a second-inning triple.  Sophomore starter Tommy Burns was tagged with the loss.  He went 3 1/3 innings giving up all six runs on nine hits and one walk while fanning two. Rookie Joe Skoczylas and sophomore Steven Hanscom combined for 4 2/3 innings of scoreless one-hit relief.

After Delaney got out of a shaky first inning with the help of a spectacular defensive effort by senior outfielder Jake Glauser that resulted in a double play, the Huskies wasted little time getting on the board.

McDonough led off the home half of the first with a single up the middle.  Dexter launched a shot to right-center field that hit halfway up the fence for an RBI double and break the career hits mark of 273 set by Tyler Delorme (2000-2003).  Dexter advanced to third on a fly ball to right and score when the relay to third was thrown away for an error.

McDonough and Dexter combined in the third for two more runs as McDonough led off the frame with a double to left-center field and Dexter followed with a home run over the scoreboard in left for his third round tripper of the season.

USM pushed its lead to 6-0 in the fourth as freshman Kip Richard led off with a double and moved to third on a one-out single from classmate Kyle O'Connor.  McDonough drove in Richard with a single as O'Connor moved up to second, and both runners moved up a base on an outfield error.  After an intentional walk to Dexter, O'Connor scored on a wild pitch.

The Eagles lone run came in the fifth when Chapman singled with one out, moved to second on Delaney's only walk to rookie Mike Wong, and scored on a single to left by senior JT Whitten.  The potential rally was snuffed out as Dexter nailed Wong on the play at third base to end the inning.
