Game 1: Thomas 12, Bates 1 (5 innings)
Thomas broke a 3-0 game wide open with nine runs in the third inning to take control.
The Terriers wasted little time plating the game's first run. Freshman Lexi Colpack (Franklin, N.H. / Franklin) led off the Thomas half of the first inning with a single to left field, then scored when a throwing error allowed Veilleux to reach third base after a bunt single.
Bates put runners on the corners with none out in the top of the second inning but three successive
groundouts by Bobcat batters allowed the Terriers to get out of the inning unscathed.
Thomas added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame. After reaching on an infield single and moving to second on a throwing error, Katie Taylor (fr., Lebanon, Maine / Noble) scored on a triple by Madison Bentz (jr., Ottawa, Ill. / Ottawa Township) that ticked off the glove of a ranging Karen Lockhart in center field. Colpack plated Bentz on a sacrifice fly to extend the Terrier lead to 3-0.
The Terriers sent 13 batters to the plate in their nine-run third inning. Freshman Michaella Arsenault (Poland, Maine / Poland) opened the scoring with a two-run single that scored Jordanna Agger (so., South Portland, Maine / Wells) and Sydney LeBourveau (fr., Jericho, Vt. / Mount Mansfield Union). Back-to-back Bates fielding errors and a fielder's choice allowed three more Thomas runs to score before Veilleux rocked a 1-1 offering from Bates starter Kylie Martin over the wall in left field for a two-run home run. After LeBourveau drew her second walk of the inning, Senior Korrie Laren (Blackstone, Mass. / Blackstone-Millville) and Agger followed with back-to-back RBI doubles - Laren's off Martin, Agger's off reliever Mimi Crowley.
Bates finally broke through in the top of the fourth inning. Lockhart led off the inning with a triple to right field, then scored when Maddie Inlow reached on a fielder's choice.
Veilleux and Arsenault finished with two RBIs apiece as every player in the Thomas starting lineup who had an official at-bat recorded at least one hit. The lone exception was LeBourveau, who drew a walk in each of her three plate appearances and, thus, did not have an official at-bat.
Senior Faith Robinson (Auburn, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy) earned the win, her first of the season, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out one in four innings. Freshman Haley Littlefield (Mount Desert Island, Maine / Mount Desert Island) threw a perfect fifth inning in relief for Thomas.
Game 2: Thomas 12, Bates 11 (8 innings)
Bates scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to take an 11-9 lead. Madison Bentz led off the Thomas half of the frame with an RBI single that scored Katie Taylor from second base. Lexi Colpack followed with a double to left field that moved Bentz to third to set up Veilleux's game-ending hit.
Bates grabbed the early lead in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning off Faith Robinson, who drew the start in the nightcap as well. Emma Schiller doubled down the left-field line, scoring lead-off hitter Andrea Russo. Schiller then scored on an RBI single by Lockhart. Lockhart plated the third run of the inning when she scored on an infield single by Paige Ahlholm.
Thomas clawed back with a pair of runs in its half of the first as Colpack scored on an RBI double by Veilleux. Veilleux crossed later in the inning courtesy of a wild pitch.
After a scoreless second inning, the Terriers grabbed the lead in the third when Korrie Laren blasted a three-run home run to center field.
A Veilleux RBI triple in the fourth gave Thomas a 6-3 lead but the Terriers gave it all back in the fifth as Bates plated four runs on four hits. Lockhart hit a two-run double to center, then scored on an RBI groundout by Ahlholm. Brittany Fox scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.
The Bobcats extended the lead to 8-6 in the sixth as Schiller singled up the middle to score Andrea Russo from third. Thomas rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame courtesy of back-to-back RBI singles by Colpack and Veilleux.
Bates retook the lead in the top of the seventh as Tori Fitzgerald rapped a two-out single to center field. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Thomas error to take a 9-8 lead.
The Terriers sent the game to extra innings when Laren scored on a Michaella Arsenault single up the middle.
Veilleux finished 5-for-5 and drove in five runs in the game. Korrie Laren had a pair of hits, including the three-run blast in the third inning, while Colpack and Taylor also had two hits apiece.
Robinson (2-7) threw the first 4 1/3 innings for the Terriers before being lifted in favor of Haley Littlefield. Robinson returned to the circle to start the eighth and grabbed the win. Between the two stints, totaling 5 1/3 innings, she allowed nine runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out one.
Littlefield pitched the middle 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out one.
Sunday's doubleheader was the first of five straight at home for the Terriers, who return to the Thomas Diamond on Tuesday to face UMaine-Presque Isle in a 3 p.m. twin bill.
