The Terriers (14-12, 8-6 NAC) took game one of the North Atlantic Conference twin bill, 6-1, behind a complete-game three-hitter from fellow senior Isiah Fleming (Fairfield, Maine / Lawrence), then blasted 22 hits in a 16-2 win in game two.
Prior to game one, the team's eight seniors -- Beeson, Fleming, Derek Kane (Natick, Mass. / Natick), Anree Benitez (Orlando, Fla. / University), Joe Quinlan (Westbrook, Maine / Westbrook), Brett Sommers (Palm Bay, Fla. / Heritage), Matt Romandetti (Palm Bay, Fla. / Palm Bay) and Casey Covey (Middlebury, Vt. / Middlebury Union) -- were honored for their contributions to the program.
Game 1: Thomas 6, New England College 1
Thomas spotted New England College (6-14, 5-7 NAC) a run in the top of the first inning as Lonnie
Cohen scored on a Vincent Backert double to center field. The Terriers responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning as Beeson doubled in Zach Mathieu (fr., Oakland, Maine / Messalonskee) and scored on a ground-rule double down the left-field line by sophomore Michael De Los Santos (Robstown, Texas / Robstown).
The Terriers added four more runs in the third inning. Beeson rapped a two-run double to right center, scoring Mathieu and Kane. After taking third thanks to a wild pitch and watching De Los Santos draw a walk, he scored when Sommers grounded into a double play. Later in the inning, freshman Hank Vinall (Blue Hill, Maine / George Stevens Academy) drove in Quinlan to push the Thomas lead to 6-1.
Thomas threatend to blow the game open in the fourth, loading the bases with none out, but a strikeout and a double play allowed NEC to get out of the inning without any damage.
The Pilgrims had runners at second and third in the sixth but were unable to push a run across.
Fleming (4-0) allowed just one hit after the first inning - a single by Conor Crouse in the sixth inning - while allowing just one run and striking out five.
Beeson finished with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in three, while Quinlan also had two hits.
NEC starting pitcher Christopher States (1-3) took the loss, allowing six hits on eight runs and two walks in three innings. Relievers Brendan Holloran and Tyler Gill combined to allow just two hits and two walks while striking out one over the final three innings.
Game 2: Thomas 16, New England College 2
In game two, Thomas scored at least one run in each inning, including six unearned tallies with two outs in the second inning, to coast to the win.
Anree Benitez had four hits, including an RBI single in the second inning and an RBI double in the third for the Terriers. Derek Kane added three hits and two RBIs, while Nik Beeson and Alex Curtis (so., Monmouth, Maine / Monmouth Academy) each had three hits.
Beeson finished with four RBIs on a run-scoring groundout in the first, a two-run single in the second and another RBI single in the fifth.
Kane (1-3) also picked up the pitching win for Thomas, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks while striking out eight in 6 1/3 innnings. Dominic Esposito (jr., Portland, Maine / Deering) recorded the final two outs of the game, one via strikeout.
NEC's lone hit came in the third inning when Conor Crouse rapped a two-out double to left center.
Elijah Holland (1-2) took the loss for the Pilgrims, allowing 10 runs on 13 hits over four innings. Due to a Pilgrim error to open the second inning, only four runs were earned.
The Terriers step out of NAC play this afternoon when Bowdoin comes to H. Allen Ryan Field for a 4:30 p.m. game. Their next league test comes Wednesday with a trip to rival UMaine-Farmington.
