Bates Softball drops doubleheader to USM

GORHAM, Maine -- The Bates softball team fell to the University of Southern Maine in a Thursday
doubleheader by scores of 13-5 and 9-1.

Game One: Southern Maine 13, Bates 5 (Six innings)
The Huskies scored six runs in the fifth inning to pull away in game one.

Bates fell behind 6-0 through two innings but rallied in the third and fourth frames.

In the top of the third, Karen Lockhart '16 (East Greenwich, R.I.) got the offense going with a one-out single. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a Maddie Inlow '17 (Falmouth, Maine) single. Madison Fox '19 (Denver, Colo.) drew a walk to load the bases.

USM starter Sammi Goode (2-1) uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Lockhart to score. Then Paige
Ahlholm '18 (North Andover, Mass.) doubled home a pair of runs to cut the USM lead to 6-3.

Marina Barsoum '16 (Newark, N.J.) got the Bobcats' offense going in the fourth with lead-off single. Andrea Russo '19 (Cheshire, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice and Emma Schiller '18 (Natick, Mass.) doubled Russo in to pull Bates to within two runs. After Schiller advanced to third on a wild pitch, Lockhart drove in her second run of the afternoon with a double to center.
Down 6-5, Bates loaded the bases with one out, but bad luck ended the inning as Ahlholm lined into a double play.

The Huskies scored all six of their runs in the fifth inning with two outs. With the bases loaded and two down, Jen Lynch hit a bases clearing double to extend their lead to 9-5. Morgan Scavetta doubled Lynch in and Kat McKay cleared the bases with a two-run home run, opening up a 12-5 lead for the Huskies.

An Ally Pillar walk-off single in the sixth inning ended the game via the eight-run rule.

Game Two: Southern Maine 9, Bates 1 (Five innings)
Taylor Lux tallied four hits and three runs scored as USM scored early and often in a 9-1 win over Bates in game two.

Lux doubled to start the bottom of the first. Amber Kelly drew a walk and both runners moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch. One out later Courtney Davis singled home Lux. Kelly moved to third on the play and scored on a Samantha Crosman RBI grounder.

Already up 2-0, USM plated two more runs in the second inning. With two outs and nobody on, Lux singled. Kelly got hit by a pitch and Mary Caron singled Lux in to extend the lead to 3-0. A Bates error allowed another run to score in the frame.

Down 4-0, Bates got on the board in the top of the third.

Schiller reached on an error leading-off the inning. Lockhart followed with a single and Schiller advanced to third on a fly out. With runners at the corners and one away, Fox drove in Schiller with a RBI grounder.

But three runs was as close as Bates got in the game. The Huskies tacked on three more runs in the third. A couple of run-scoring wild pitches and a Davis RBI single made the score 7-1 in favor of USM.

Lynch and Lux capped the scoring with an RBI double each in the bottom of the fourth.

Bates went down in order in the fifth as Kelly went the distance in the circle for the win.

The Bobcats open NESCAC play on Saturday at Trinity with a doubleheader starting at 1:00.
