WATERVILLE, Maine -- The No. 22 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team swept doubles play en route to an 8-1 NESCAC victory at Colby on Thursday, the Bobcats' third straight win.

No. 1 singles pitted two of the top players in New England Division III men's tennis in Bates sophomore Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.)  and Colby's Carl Reid.

Reid was a 6-4 winner in the opening set, but Rosen, the sixth-ranked singles player in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, battled back for 6-3, 6-4 set wins to close out the match. Reid, ranked ninth in the Northeast, entered the match undefeated in singles play, but drops to 7-1 on the season.

Rosen and his No. 1 doubles partner, junior Chris Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.), had an 8-5 win over
Reid and Vlad Murad. Junior duo Pat Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) and Fergus Scott (Wellington, New Zealand) posted an 8-5 win at second doubles over Mark HoSang and Shaw Speer, and at third doubles Bates sophomore Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) and first-year Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) fended off Jeremy Mendoza and Matt Martin by an 8-6 score.

Scott and Ordway won convincingly in straight sets at third and fifth singles, respectively, while junior Brent Feldman (Waccabuc, N.Y.) outlasted Speer in three sets at fourth singles.

Quijano wasted no time in defeating Alexander Thrane at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-3.

Murad was Colby's winner at second singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ellis.

Bates improves to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in NESCAC play, while the Mules drop to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in the league.

The Bobcats next play a non-conference match at No. 32 Brandeis April 3 at 11am.
