Southern Maine Moves to 6-0 with 7-2 Win Over UMass Dartmouth

GORHAM, Maine  –  Sophomore Samuel Holland (Falmouth, Maine) scored the deciding fifth point at fourth singles to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 7-2 win over the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon at the Gorham High School Tennis Courts.  The match was a replay of the 2015 Little East Conference Championship, which the Huskies claimed 5-0.   

 

With the win, Southern Maine remains undefeated and improves to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Little East.  UMass Dartmouth sees its two-match win-streak come to a halt and falls to 2-7 overall and 1-1 in the LEC.

Southern Maine jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles points were played and then won five of six singles points en route to the 7-2 LEC victory over the Corsairs.  Senior Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and junior Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine), 8-1 winners at first doubles, scored the Huskies' third and fourth points of the match with decisive wins at first and second singles respectively.  Adams downed UMD senior Daniel Chouinard (Westport, Mass.) 6-1, 6-2 at the top of the line up, while Curley repeated Adams' effort at second singles defeating junior Corey Rafter (Franklin, Mass.).  Holland claimed the fifth and deciding match-point at fourth singles defeating Corsair freshman Anthony Joseph (Fairhaven, Mass.) 6-1, 6-2.

The Corsairs scored points at third doubles and sixth singles.  UMD senior Jake Jaskolka (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) earned an 8-1 win at sixth singles over USM sophomore Robert Stowe (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy).

Southern Maine returns on the road this Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) at Bridgewater State in a Little East Conference match.  UMass Dartmouth travels to Rhode Island College on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) in an LEC contest.
